KENNEBUNKPORT -- Mary Elizabeth Billings, 76, of Mills Road, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Evergreen Manor in Saco after a long illness.
Mary was born in Dorchester, Mass., on Feb. 16, 1934, the daughter of Joseph and Evelyn (nee Turvanen) Welch.
Mary graduated from St. Augustus Catholic School in Dorchester, Mass. She worked in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs and had to be evacuated. Later she was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for over 20 years at the Kennebunkport Post Office.
Mrs. Billings was Past Matron and a member of the Aurora Chapter 190 of the Order of Eastern Star, Past Mother/Advisor of Rainbow Girls and involved with the local Brownies and Girl Scouts Troops.
She enjoyed crafts and made many Christmas villages out of plastic canvas. She greatly enjoyed traveling with her husband on various Masonic trips.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Welch, and a sister, Carol Welch. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, David J. Billings of Kennebunkport; a son, Thomas Byrne and his wife Martha of Alfred, three daughters, Mary and husband Dr. Timothy McCormick of Jacksonville, Fla., Kathlyn Belanger and her husband Mark of Grafton, Wis., and Beverly Bonness and her husband Greg of Brownsburg, Ind.; two sisters, Rosemary Frost and Evelyn Moakley, both of South Boston, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, from 2 to 3 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. A spring interment is planned at the Southern Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.
