Newell Libby Obituary

Newell F. Newt Libby Jr., 83
PORTLAND -- Newell F. Newt Libby Jr., 83, of Portland died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at his home.
He was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Portland a son of Newell F. Libby Sr. and Sarah Goodnow. He lived in Portland his entire life and attended Portland schools.
Newell was barely eighteen when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served three years in China, Burma and India. Following the war, he enlisted in the Maine National Guard 103rd Infantry.
He was employed for six years by the Portland Public Works Department until he resigned to become a Portland police officer where he rode a motorcycle in the traffic division. Mr. Libby was later employed by Pens Unlimited and Discount Martin.
He married Barbara (Scribner in 1946, his soul mate and wife for 60 years. They were blessed with four wonderful children, Barbara and her husband Richard Thomas, Beth and her husband Robert Holsinger, Newell III and his wife Allie Libby and Mark Sr. and his wife Julie Libby, seven beautiful grandchildren, Regan, Beth, Eric, Denette, Mark Jr., Jason and Jared as well as nine amazing great-grandchildren, Aura, Mariah, Brandon, Wynn, Owen, Samuel, Ellis, Greta and Delsin.
Newell was an avid sportsman. He played baseball, softball, golf and rarely missed a game on TV. He collected coins and stamps and was a whiz at solving crossword puzzles and search a word puzzles. He always completed them in ink.
When his boys were old enough to play Little League, he took them to Little League 4 on Baxter Blvd. That was the beginning of fifteen years in Little League. He coached, umpired, managed and served as President of Little League 4. It was a memorable time for the whole family. After supper each night the family would head to the ballfield and then on to Dairy Queen after the game.
After his retirement, he went to Maine Medical Center and signed up as a volunteer. Some of the most fulfilling and happiest times of his life were during the eighteen years he spent as a volunteer working with the amazing people in the OR Dept. Newell always had really warm feelings for all of them.
He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very fond of his brothers and sisters-in-law and their families.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the tender loving care they were given by Real Angels, a team from Hospice of Southern Maine. To all of their kind friends and neighbors a special thank you for the prayers, cards, hugs and love.
At Newell's request there will be no service or visiting hours. Arrangements are by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
