Nicholas Mavodones Obituary

Nicholas M. Mavodones, 82
PORTLAND - Nicholas M. Mavodones, 82, formerly of Yarmouth, passed away, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Mercy Hospital, following a long illness.
Nick was born on July 22, 1934, in Portland, the son of Michael N. and Catina (Alexandrou) Mavodones. He grew up, along with his brothers, on Elm Street in Portland. Nick was a proud graduate of Portland High School and a member of the 1952 Portland High State Championship football team. He also attended Maine Central Institute where he played on the football and basketball teams. Nick was a graduate of Portland University (now the University of Southern Maine).
Nick married the former Patricia Ann "Patti" Carr in 1958 in Portland. They moved with their young children to Yarmouth in 1963 where they resided for many wonderful years.
Nick worked from 1964 until his retirement in 1989 as a special agent for the Offices of Naval Intelligence, Naval Investigative Service and Defense Investigative Service. Prior to his career as a special agent, Nick managed, along with his brothers, their family-owned Willows Hotel in Prouts Neck. Following his retirement, he spent many wonderful years enjoying local restaurant cuisine with his beloved wife, Patti, on a nightly basis. Most significantly, Nick cherished family more than anything else. For those who knew him, love, loyalty and devotion defined his life. Nick was deeply devoted to the upbringing of his grandson, Alexander. The two had a special and unbreakable bond. He and Alexander shared some of the best times of their lives together and he never let him down.
Nick was particularly proud of his Greek heritage and spoke often about his parents growing up on Marmara Island and their emigration to the United States. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and, at one time, played on a very successful Greek Church basketball team that participated in the Harry Agganis Basketball Tournament in Massachusetts. In later years, a highlight for Nick each year was attending and volunteering at the Annual Greek Food Festival at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Nick was a lifetime member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Alumni Association. He also was a longtime member of Demolay. Prior to his illness, Nick greatly enjoyed exercising at Basics Gym and especially enjoyed going out for coffee and socializing with his many friends following their workouts.
Nick was predeceased by his wife, Patti Mavodones, in 2007. He was also predeceased by his parents; brother, Zacharias Mavodones; brother-in-law, Richard T. Carr; and sister-in-law, Nancy Carr.
He is survived by his son, Nicholas M. Mavodones Jr. and his wife Kelly Hasson, of Portland; his daughter, Cathi A. Mavodones, of Portland; grandchildren, Nicholas M. Mavodones III, of Detroit, Mich.; Joseph M. Mavodones and his wife Emily Mavodones, of Cape Elizabeth; Jillian D. Mavodones, of Portland; and Alexander E. Jordan, of Portland; great-grandchildren, Lydia Addison Mavodones and Jack Nicholas Mavodones, of Cape Elizabeth; brothers and sisters-in-law, Zinas and Kiki Mavodones of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Socrates and Frances Mavodones, of South Portland; sister-in-law, Eleanor Mavodones and her husband Steve Gagnon, of Westbrook; brother-in-law, Daniel J. Carr III and his wife Amber Hsueh, of Portland; and sister-in-law, Rita Carr, of Westbrook. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, and other family and dear friends.
His family would like to extend their most sincere appreciation to the staff at the Barron Center and Mercy Hospital for their exceptionally compassionate care during Nick's illness.

Nick and the entire Mavodones family have contributed a great deal to the city of Portland. I looked up to Nick at Portland High School and enjoyed talking with him at the boys and girls club alum. meetings. I also had the opportunity to talk with him and Zeke on many occasions at the restaurant across from PHS. He was a wonderful man. My condolences to the entire Mavodones family.
