Richard Crockett Obituary

Richard 'Rick'
L. Crockett, 61
Visual Poet
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rick died unexpectedly on May 10, 2012, in Washington, D.C., after a brief illness.
Throughout the years he lived in Portland, he worked at F. Parker Reidy's and various Portland law firms as a paralegal.
Rick, a visual poet shared his view of the world through the lens of his camera. His work 'Tidal Ways' captured the love he felt for the shoreline of California and was recently exhibited at Politics & Prose, one of D.C.'s preeminent bookstores. Rick also wrote poetry, his latest efforts being 'Moses Stuttered (Musings on Love, Faith and Other Tricks of Light). He was also the creator of 'Lines on the Face of Portland,' a framed exhibition of six impressionistic 'wall poems' commemorating the 350th birthday of Maine's largest city.
An avid sports fan, Rick rooted for the N.Y. Yankees alongside his brother, John Crockett (Freeport), and sisters, Katherine McGowen (Windham) and Jane Bryson (Winthrop). He comforted his sister, Anne Crockett (Charleston, Utah) when his Giants defeated her team in the Super Bowl and was a gracious 'winner' both times. He was a loyal Tiger Woods fan and periodically enjoyed frustrating himself on the golf course.
Rick was a longtime devoted fan of Bruce Springsteen, attending his concerts for decades. He forged numerous friendships with his fellow Bruce fans, touching dozens more lives in a very real, profound, and lasting way.
But it was Rick's graciousness and spirit that was most special. Rick was unfailingly hopeful. He was deeply loyal to his friends and was a beloved 'Uncle Rick' to his nieces, nephews, and the children of his many friends. He was called 'Uncle Donald' by his great-nephews because of his knack for imitating Donald Duck. Always a punster, one never knew whether to laugh or groan at Rick's turn of phrase. And he never met a movie he didn't like. Except for Dirty Dancing. He and his mom, Marie Crockett (Scarborough) accompanied each other to any new 'English' movie release.
Stunned by his passing, Rick's friends describe him as: 'an amazing poet, a true artist, a wise, soft soul.' 'We'll miss knowing the world is just a that much gentler, wiser, and decent place for having you in it.' And finally, 'he had a beautiful way of disagreeing without being disagreeable.'
Rick was Born in the USA, but Portland was his hometown. He is survived by his mom and siblings, many nieces, nephews and a plethora of friends. He follows his dad, Everett Crockett, and his friends, Trisha Barton, and Pat Lopes.
Steve Bartlett, a close friend, has prepared a tribute for Rick on YouTube titled Rick Crockett: A Tribute. We invite you to share the joy we feel by having had Rick in our lives.

Rick worked in my office for several years at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C.. He was a fine paralegal and, more important, an interesting and sensitive person. His love of poetry, music and photography gave him a unique perspective in our legal environment. I won't forget he was the one who helped me understand Bruce Springsteen was as much a poet as a musician!

Rick and I stayed in touch after we both left the Commerce Department in the early aughts. His sense of humor and "eye," reflected in his photography and his poetry, revealed his deep soul and recognition of beauty all around him. He remained optimistic to the unexpected end. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. You will be missed, my friend.

I worked with Rick at F. Parker Reidy's back in the 70's and 80's. We sort of kept in touch over the years. We had breakfast together a couple of years ago with a few friends from the Reidy's days. I think of him every time I bring out the chopping board with the carved sun he gave to us for a wedding gift. He was a swell guy and we will miss him. Sending our thoughts and prayers to his family.

Rick has left a deep hole in my heart and a lasting impression on my mind. He touched so many people in so many positive ways, even across borders and oceans. I miss him.

I too met him on the Springsteen website back on '02. We spoke on the phone a couple of times but never got to meet face to face. All of his communications exuded class, passion, and empathy. I am so saddened that we won't gay to see The Boss together. Losing him must be doubly hard for hi family. All my best to all of you. Thank you Rick. They broke the mold!

I met Rick via Bruce Springsteen's website. Spoke to him on the phone way back in 2003 and reconnected this year via Facebook. An intelligent, insightful, kind, witty man. He will be missed.

So sad to hear of Rick's passing. I have so many fond memories of him as a fellow F. Parker "Reidian." One of a kind. A gracious, witty, classy gentleman and artist in all ways! I think I still have one of his first books: "What do you say to an Atheist who sneezes?" Rest in Peace Rick. May comfort and the love you have given surround your family at this time...
