Richard McLoon Obituary

Richard F. McLoon, 87
PORTLAND - Richard F. "Dick" McLoon, 87, passed peacefully Oct. 26, 2016, at the Gosnell House in Scar-borough. Dick was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Lowell, Mass., to Edwin R. and Anabel (Davidson) McLoon.
He was born with an extreme case of asthma and wasn't expected to survive. He defied the odds, and while confined to bedrest in his early years, he became an avid reader. Dick began attending public school in the sixth grade. He went on to graduate from the Northfield Mt. Hermon School, and Boston University College of Fine Arts with a degree in music.
Dick was gifted with a wonderful tenor singing voice, and was in demand as a soloist in numerous musical productions. He taught music for many years, beginning at Windsor High School in Vermont, and later in Massachusetts at Newburyport High School, Pen-tucket Regional High School, and Hamilton-Wenham High School. He also served as conductor of the Pentucket Choral Art Society and the Newburyport Choral Art Society. While living in the Portland area, Dick enjoyed singing in the Choral Art Society.
After earning a master's degree in history from Salem State College, Dick was chosen to participate in a program in San Francisco for social studies teachers, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, where one of his instructors was U.S. Secretary of Education Bill Bennett. Dick drew on his experience as a member of the B.U. wrestling team when coaching high school wrestling.
Upon Dick's retirement from teaching, he became business manager of the Marilyn McLoon Real Estate Company. He also took courses at USM to become a certified fitness instructor, and later joined the staff in the Lifeline Program at USM. In his later years, Dick enjoyed taking classes at USM's Osher Lifeline Learning Institute (OLLI).
Dick was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Linda Snow McLoon; children Lauren Moskowitz of Georgetown, Mass., David McLoon of Ipswich, Mass., Amy Juneau of Ipswich, Mass., Christopher McLoon of Yarmouth, and Wendy Waterman of Bangor. His grandchildren include Evan and Ilana Moskowitz; Ian, Erin, Patrick and Meredith McLoon; Raquel Miller; and Emelia, Bailey, and Colon Waterman.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m. at The Woods at Canco, 257 Canco Rd., Portland.
