Ruby Beckwith Obituary

Ruby J. Beckwith, 88
NORTH YARMOUTH -- Ruby Jannetta Beckwith passed away at her home on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, in the loving care of her sons and Hospice of Southern Maine.
She was born in North Weare, N.H., ('no where' she used to like to say) on May 27, 1923, the daughter of Lewis and Jannetta Judd. She was raised at Mast Landing in South Freeport, and attended schools and worked in the shoe shops of Freeport in her youth.
She was a homemaker and volunteered 20 plus years in the local schools helping with fried clam and baked bean suppers that kids used to hold as fund raisers for the field trips she also helped to chaperone.
She was, for years, a tireless all round 'field general' of the pick-your-own strawberry patch that she and her husband Marvin maintained for many years on into their 80s.
Ruby is survived by her sons, John and friend Kay Bouchard, and Dennis and his wife Janet. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Paul, his wife Carrie, and their children Zackary and Jacob; Robin, her husband Frederick Rowe, and their children Cameron and Taylor; and Matthew, his wife Tonya, and son Sam. She was predeceased by her mother and father; her husband of 65 years, Marvin Beckwith; and all of her Judd brothers and sisters: Lewis (Buck), Jack, Millie, Lloyde, Nellie, Freda, Walter, Bill and Gertrude.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who made the rounds of the local nursing homes for many years bringing love to her friends and neighbors during their stay.
Ruby's family extends their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Hospice of Southern Maine who made it possible for her to live her final days at home on the Baston road in North Yarmouth. Thank you so much Duska, Amy, Marie, Angela, Lisa and volunteer Betsy.
There will be a graveside memorial service at Grove Cemetery off Pleasant Hill Road in South Freeport on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. Condolences may be expressed at www.funeralalternatives.net.

Both Marvin and Ruby were wonderful neighbors. I watched Marvin tirelessly working on his strawberry fields pretty much 8 to 9 months out of the year and recall Ruby set up under the big old tree welcoming the pickers in July. They had a quiet presence by the time we moved into the neighborhood but it was sad driving by their home this morning knowing that they were both gone. The neighborhood continues to delight in the story of Marvin and Ruby adopting a neighbors rooster that had wandered into their basement. That rooster may still be there today!

Ruby was one of my favorite people. I used to come every summer to pick strawberries and visit with Marvin and Ruby. I first met them when I was a teacher in Yarmouth. Evelyn Tamminen, who taught in Yarmouth for years, became my friend. She was one of Ruby's close friends, and she told me about the strawberries. Ruby would take time out to come down in the field and pick for me for a while, even though she was so busy trying to get the berries picked for the farm stand down the road.

She was forever tending out on others in need, and never thought of herself.

I visited her after Marvin died. She was mostly all right, though she missed him terribly. She took care of him always and was with him when he went to Heaven. They always seemed to get along so well.

I know she is with him now, and I can hear her laughing. I'll always love her.
