Both Marvin and Ruby were wonderful neighbors. I watched Marvin tirelessly working on his strawberry fields pretty much 8 to 9 months out of the year and recall Ruby set up under the big old tree welcoming the pickers in July. They had a quiet presence by the time we moved into the neighborhood but it was sad driving by their home this morning knowing that they were both gone. The neighborhood continues to delight in the story of Marvin and Ruby adopting a neighbors rooster that had wandered into their basement. That rooster may still be there today!

Ruby was one of my favorite people. I used to come every summer to pick strawberries and visit with Marvin and Ruby. I first met them when I was a teacher in Yarmouth. Evelyn Tamminen, who taught in Yarmouth for years, became my friend. She was one of Ruby's close friends, and she told me about the strawberries. Ruby would take time out to come down in the field and pick for me for a while, even though she was so busy trying to get the berries picked for the farm stand down the road.
She was forever tending out on others in need, and never thought of herself.
I visited her after Marvin died. She was mostly all right, though she missed him terribly. She took care of him always and was with him when he went to Heaven. They always seemed to get along so well.
I know she is with him now, and I can hear her laughing. I'll always love her.
