Ruth E. "Ellie" Conley, 94
SOUTH PORTLAND - Ruth E. "Ellie" Conley was called home on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015. Born on Nov. 4, 1920, to Lewis and Eva Day, Ellie was a true lady and a beautiful soul. She loved her family and took great pride in her grandchildren.
She married Coleman L. "Bud" Conley in 1941 in Portsmouth, N.H., and later settled in South Portland and raised three loving children.
She was an avid reader and a day didn't go by that she hadn't completed the daily crossword puzzle. She loved providing meals for her family from the gardening to the canning to the preparing. She was a great cook. She also loved her sports. She was a big fan of all New England sports teams and kept up to date on the latest events.
She graduated in 1938 from Gorham High School, where she was the captain of the girls basketball team and went on to North Eastern Business College where she graduated from and got a job with the Maine Railroad. She went on to work for Porteous, Mitchell and Braun and then finished her career with Jordan Marsh where she later retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Eva Day; sisters, Muriel and Margaret, brothers, Kenneth and Lewis; her son Michael; and her husband.
She is survived by her children, Robert and his wife Marion Conley of Sebastian, Fla., and her daughter, Donna Plummer of Cape Elizabeth, and daughter-in-law, Lila Conley of Saco; nieces and nephews; and quite a few grandchildren; and just as many great-grandchildren.
A graveside ceremony will be held at Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery on Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, at 2 p.m. Online condolences may be shared at www.hobbsfuneralhome.com Arrangements are made by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
