Warren Gilman Obituary

Warren Bertrand Gilman, 88
GORHAM - Warren Bertrand Gilman, 88, a lifelong resident of North Gorham, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018. The son of Bertrand and Effie (Hurd) Gilman, he was born in Portland on August 11, 1929.
After graduation from Gorham High School as valedictorian, he earned a bachelor's degree from Bates College. He married Emma Weber and they settled in North Gorham to raise their two children.
Warren worked as a chemist in both the research lab and the tech lab at the S.D. Warren paper company. He worked on a team that developed five patents in the paper industry. He loved to walk in North Gorham, and was interested in astronomy, becoming very familiar with the night sky. He always had an interest in history and was active in both the Gorham and Windham historical societies. He enjoyed both reading and writing poetry, which led to his being one of the founding members of the North Gorham Writing Group. For his interest in his community, he received a Jefferson Award in 1986.
He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in North Gorham, singing in the choir and serving on the trustees' board.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma; his daughter, Cynthia Gilman, and her spouse, Ann Whitlatch, of Johnstown, Ohio; his son, Bertrand Warren Gilman, and his wife, Kelley, of Saco; and his granddaughter, Sonny Rizza, her husband, Brendan, and his two great-granddaughters, Arianna and Alexas, of Gorham.
A memorial service will be held in April at the UCC Church in North Gorham; date and time to be determined. Arrangements are under the care of Dolby, Blais & Segee, Windham Chapel. Interment will take place in the spring at North Gorham Cemetery. To view Warren's tribute page and to sign his online guest book, visit: www.dolbyblaissegee.com.

I am very saddened to hear of the loss of Warren Gilman. He was an anchor for the community, a part of the human bedrock that made North Gorham such a magical place to grow up in. Sending much love to Mrs. Gilman, Cynthia, and Bert.

I feel I was very fortunate to have met Warren, he was a quiet man who very much loved his Emma, Cindy and Bert and they loved him in return. Warren never bragged about his accomplishments including the fact he was a great artist, his paintings are beautiful. I have to say his wife Emma was such a loving and devoted wife. Emma you will always have Warren in your heart, and in the many memories you have of him.
