Anita Miller Obituary

Anita Poole Miller passed away on October 5, 2012, at the age of 76. Anita was born in Philadelphia, grew up in Pittsburgh, later moved to Cincinnati and graduated from Ohio State University. Anita met her sweetheart, Howard, "Sonny" Miller, through their parents who were good friends. They were married for 51 years. She was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. Anita loved children and taught pre-school until her own children were born and then she devoted her life to being a mom. As her children reached school age, Anita became actively involved in the Lower Merion School District. She was president of Bryn Mawr, Welsh Valley and Harriton Home and School Associations as well as president of Interschool Council. She volunteered on many district committees and spent countless hours developing programs and activities to enhance and support the education of the students in the Lower Merion School District. In addition, Anita served as president for the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children and the Pennsylvania School Public Relations Association. In the 1980s, Anita returned to work and continued to serve the Lower Merion School District as a reading tutor, Coordinator of Volunteer Resources and Coordinator of Communications. Upon retirement in 1999, Anita worked part-time as a consultant for PENSPRA. It was very important for Anita to be involved in all that her children were doing. She was a den mother, a cheerleading coach, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and she was the director of the Rosemont Villanova Civic Association, organizing a soccer and baseball league for children. Swimming, gardening, reading and going to the beach, especially Stone Harbor, were some of her favorite things to do, but the highlight of her life was being Grammy and spoiling her grandchildren. Whether it was baking, reading, playing or singing with her grandkids, she always had a smile on her face and was teaching them something new. You had to smile when you were around Anita. She had a wonderful personality and was beautiful on the inside and out. She was a leader in everything she did and she took great pride in her work. Anita was incredibly thoughtful and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Anita is the beloved wife of the late Howard "Sonny" Miller, loving mother to Andy, Bob (Jackie), Beth (Jerry) Adams, adored Grammy of Emily, Sarah, Noah and Max, dear sister of Dottie (Bob), and special aunt to Rick (Paula), Kacie and Michelle, Karen (Chip), David and Brian. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 1:00 pm on October 13, 2012 at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave. Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. Reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Anita's name to The Alzheimer's Association P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011 or The American Cancer Society P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718. The family requests that you take a moment to reflect on Anita and Howard's life and how they may have touched your life. It is important for them to be able to share these stories with Anita and Howard's grandchildren. Cards will be made available for everyone at the service so that the family can read them at a later date or you may send your memories directly to a family member. Dear Andy,Bob, Beth, and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. The first time I met her at Bryn Mawr Elementary School, she impressed me with her kind and caring words. She volunteered her time at the school and helped make the school a better place for all the teachers and students. She also raised three wonderful kids that I had the pleasure to have taught at the Bryn Mawr school. Anita will be missed but never forgotten.

Anna O'Hora shared the sad news about your mother's/grandmother's passing. She played an important part during my early years in the Lower Merion School District. We bonded easily as we were both Buckeyes!

Always a stickler for detail, a source of reliable information, and knowledgeable about who, what, when, and where in the community, Anita Miller was a class act

I was glad that Judy and I got to know both of your parents/grandparents. I often think of Howard when I wear a bow tie to work.

With sincere condolences, David and Judy Magill

Anita was a good friend, PenSPRA colleague and friend. She could always be counted on and always had a ready smile or laugh. I never heard her complain although her final weeks were very trying. We all are better for having known Anita.

A Poem for Anita Miller

This was a woman
With kindness in her heart
From the end of her days
Way back to the start.

Soft-spoken and elegant
Kind hearted and true,
She cared about everyone,
She cared about you.

But most of all
She enjoyed being a wife,
a mother, a grandmother,
a sister, a friend, an aunt.
She never said, "No"
Or "I'm sorry--I can't".

Remember her beauty
And all that she gave,
When looking towards Heaven,
Remember to wave.
