Catherine Berens Obituary

Catherine "Kay" M. Berens (nee Mooney), age 84, of Haverford, PA, formerly of Wynnewood. Beloved wife of the late Richard Conrad Berens, devoted mother of Connie (Thomas) Berens Purcell and special Nana to her two cherished granddaughters Amanda (Luiz) Purcell Gonzalez and Cynthia (Arlo) Purcell Herrine. Born in Lenoir, North Carolina, she was predeceased by her parents Hazel (Evans) and Francis Mooney and her sister Frances Dale Roper. Kay received her Bachelor's degree from Chestnut Hill College, her teaching certificate from Temple University, and her Master's degree from St. Joseph's University. For over twenty years, she was an elementary music teacher and choral music director for the Haverford School District, serving at Brookline, Coopertown and Lynnewood Elementary Schools. Kay generously shared her passion for music with the district's young people and was renowned for the quality of their concert performances every year. She was a talented musician who enjoyed playing her piano to an always appreciative audience well into her later years. A gifted storyteller, Kay never lost her soft Southern accent, quick-witted charm and wry sense of humor. Friends and family are invited to Kay's Life Celebration at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 16, 2012 followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, St. John Neumann, 380 Highland Lane, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. Interment at West Laurel Hill Cemetary, Bala Cynwyd, PA. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to The Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 in her memory. Connie, I need to send you a card and have lunch with you. I have been thinking about Kay all day since I heard. So many of my defining food stories start with your mom saying, "I just like to put a stick of butter in the pan, watch it melt and say, my that's lovely, what should I cook in that?" I would so love to see you and reminisce. I will be out of town tomorrow and could not get my plans changed, but I do so want you to know how much your mom impacted my life.

love to you and her memory,

Connie Berens
