Edward Dearden Obituary

Edward Chapin Dearden, 87, of Villanova, a retired Investment Counselor, died Monday, June 5, 2017 as a result of complications from pancreatic cancer at Lankenau with family at his bedside. After starting his business career with Girard Trust Company and subsequently Lionel D. Edie & Co., Mr. Dearden left to establish his own firm. For three decades he headed an investment advisory company that eventually became Dearden, Maguire, Weaver and Barrett, Inc. in Conshohocken. His former partner, Alex Maquire, described Mr. Dearden as a great boss and mentor who taught him much of what he knows today. Mr. Dearden graduated from The Haverford School in 1947 and from The University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, in 1953 after serving two years in the Army. He was a member and Trustee at the Tau chapter of Psi Upsilon fraternity and remained an active supporter throughout his life.
In school, Mr. Dearden ran track and he remained physically active throughout his life. He was a long-term member of The Merion Cricket Club and continued to play tennis regularly until last summer. He was also a member of The Union League for many years and enjoyed lectures and luncheons with the Wishbone Club. After his retirement, he continued to pursue his true passion of following and investing in stocks and bonds. Throughout his life, Mr. Dearden served on various Boards and was the last original Trustee at the Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary in Easton, Pa. where he remained involved until very recently. Although he was a successful and sophisticated investor, a consistent philanthropist and an international traveler, he remained a quiet man who enjoyed the simple things in life. Mr. Dearden is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne (nee Carrigan), children Leigh D. Harvey (Roy), Douglas (Kathleen), and Susan Dearden Bryan (David); 6 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 11:00am Wednesday, June 14 at Wayne United Methodist Church, 210 S. Wayne Ave., Wayne where friends may call after 10:00am. Interment will be private. Dear Dearden family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. May the God of all comfort be with you during this time. Isaiah 61:2

We know Ed Dearden through our relationship with his youngest daughter, Susan. In our limited experience interacting with Ed, he was a quiet, reserved man with lots of love for his family and grandchildren. He was also very gracious, modest and enjoyed the simple things of life. He's finally playing tennis pain free!
