Michael Strong Obituary

Michael Lincoln Strong died on October 14, 2012 at Bryn Mawr Hospital, following a long illness. At death, he was five days short of his 82nd birthday. Born in London, England in 1930, he emigrated to the United States in 1941, on the last U.S. passenger ship to sail from Ireland to the U.S. before the U.S. entered World War II. He became a naturalized citizen in 1946. He resided at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, following almost 50 years living in Devon. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann Louise (Schulz) Strong, and by two sons, Mark Lincoln Strong of Harleysville, PA and Christopher Davis Strong of Burleson, TX. He also is survived by his grandson, Samuel Lincoln Strong and his step-grandson, Nicholas Brander of Harleysville, PA, and by his grand-daughter, Jessica Strong Mooney, and her son, Patrick Zane Mooney, of Clairton, PA. Mr. Strong graduated from The Hotchkiss School, Yale University, and Yale Law School. Between college and law school he served in the U.S. Air Force and, on discharge in 1955, was a first lieutenant. On graduation from the Yale Law School he received the Jurisprudence Prize. He and his wife chose to move to Philadelphia because of its outstanding reputation for urban renewal under the leadership of Richardson Dilworth. Mr. Strong joined the law firm of Saul Ewing, where he specialized in commercial real estate. He served as President of the Philadelphia Housing Association and of the Citizens' Council on City Planning. Mr. Strong enjoyed playing tennis with friends at the Merion Cricket Club, travels particularly to France where close friends reside, and scholarship. He spent many years exploring the evolution of Islamic concepts and leaves a substantial collection of books on this topic. A Remembrance Gathering will be held on Wednesday October 24 at 4PM at Beaumont 601 N. Ithan Ave. Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael Strong's name may be made to The Beaumont Fund for Landscaping.

I hope you don't mind my entering an entry here, but I have been trying to trace the Strong/Baker/Emanuel families for some time now. You see, my Mother was Michael Strong's Governess in the late 1930s, being employed by Mr Gerald and Mrs Beverly Emanuel (nee Baker) Her name then was PEGGY TARLING. Sadly, she died 13 July this year, aged 94. I would be delighted if any of Michael's descendants feel inclined to contact me - I have a couple of photos of him when he was a child in London. Of course, my condolences go to the family. Should you wish to contact me, you can do so at [email protected]

Ann, Mark and Chris - Our sincere sympathies go out to you.
I'll always remember cousin Michael for all he did for our little Baker family. He was the one who kept me in touch with news of our Baker family members.
