Sylvia Newcomb Dunmore Schnaars

Sylvia Newcomb Dunmore Schnaars, of Haverford, Pennsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Beautiful, brilliant, and beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she was born in Utica, New York, on November 27, 1923, the oldest of three daughters of Earl and Elise Dunmore. She was married to her devoted husband, James A. Schnaars on January 23, 1945. Together they had four children: Robert Dunmore Schnaars (Sharon), James Albert Schnaars, Jr., (Sydney), Mary Bayliss Goodyear Schnaars Otto (Thomas), and Richard Palmer Schnaars (Alisa). She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Barbara and Alice, and her husband. Mom was an amazing woman. She was a Phi Beta Kappa scholar at Ohio Wesleyan University and a straight-A Masters student in Library Sciences at Villanova University. She was incredibly supportive of her husband's outstanding tennis career, as well as her children's many passions and pursuits. After raising her children, Mom went on to be the periodicals librarian at Haverford College for twenty-four years. She worked as a docent at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Mom was also an ardent supporter of the opera and the symphony in both Philadelphia and New York City. She taught us all how to appreciate art, music, self-sacrifice, and care for all of our fellow human beings. She instilled in each of us that magical sense of wonder and delight in the world around us. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service on Sat. August 10th, 3 PM in the Chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr PA.
