Glen D. Scherer

WESTERVILLE: Glen D. Scherer, 78, of Westerville and former Galion resident passed away, Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Heartland of Uptown Westerville.

He was born May 27, 1935 in Sandusky and was the son of Paul and Sylvia (Robinson) Scherer.

Glen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Yunker) Scherer whom he married on September 14, 1957.

He is also survived by his three children, Pamela (Joel) Kratzer of Westerville, Cynthia (Brad) Smith of Miamisburg, Stephen (Maria) Scherer of Westerville; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Manly, Laura (Kurt) Marks, Brenton Kratzer, Ryan (Nikki) Smith, Adam Smith, Chad Smith, David Scherer and Andrew Scherer; two great-grandchildren Alexa and Quin Manly; a sister, Virginia Lindenberger of Norwalk; and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn Miller and Pauline Perry; a brother, Richard Scherer; and an infant daughter, Shirley.

Glen was a 1954 graduate of Galion High School and proudly served his county in the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He lived most of his life in Galion, working for PECO II and for the various companies at that facility for 45 years retiring in 1999. Glen was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Galion, singing in the choir and serving on church council. Also, he was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Columbus where he and Shirley had lived since 2002. Glen enjoyed watching and participating in youth sports in Galion and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was also a member of the Galion Booster Club and was well known for his famous bean soup for the Galion Pickle Run Festival.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Snyder Funeral Home Richardson Davis Chapel in Galion and one hour prior to the funeral starting Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 291 North Union St., Galion with Pastor Anne Pairan and Rev. Tim Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps and Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

Memorial contributions may be made to Music Funds at the Ascension Lutheran Church, 1479 Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43329 or Trinity Lutheran Church, 291 N. Union St., Galion, Ohio 44833.

Steve, I am sorry to hear about your father's passing. I know this is a tough time for you, and you thought a lot of him. I'm sure he couldn't be more proud of the son you turned out to be. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the funeral, and I want you to know that I can help out in any way you need.
