Mansfield - Melvin Switzer, 89, of Mansfield passed away May 11, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

Melvin was born May 4, 1932 in Mansfield to Earl and Wanda Miller Switzer. He was a 1950 graduate of Lexington High School and then served in the United States Army in Korea and Japan. Melvin was a Police Officer, Richland County Sheriff Deputy and retired as a Fraud Investigator for the Welfare Department. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and served as an usher for 55 years. Melvin served as the American Legion State Commander from 1983-1984 and was a life member for all Veteran's organizations.

Survivors include his children: Kris Reindl, Joe Switzer, Toni (Dwayne) Daugherty, Eva (Rick) Heckert; grandchildren: Kristi Reindl, Joe (Lori) Reindl, Daniel Gentile, Moriah Daugherty; great-grandchildren: Talan, Kassidy, Holden and Kyson Reindl, Lucas Gentile; half-siblings: John Gleisinger, Freida Webb, Ralph Gleisinger; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Mary Ann Switzer; sister Marlene Hastings, half-brother Stanly Gleisinger.

Friends may call at Herlihy Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Monday from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00am Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Moebius officiating. Burial will follow at Mansfield Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church or Sisters of St. Francis.

Mel, I am sorry to see you go, but we had fun all those years ago as students at Lexington High School. Our graduating class is diminished by your passing. I salute you for your long career in the military and law enforcement. We need more like you these days. Here is my "Hand Salute" Sir!
