When I was working on municipal issues in New York as the president of the Council on Municipal Performance, I called Indianapolis City Hall. It was late, and I wondered if anyone would answer. Mayor Lugar answered the phone himself. He was a help to my work and a friend to New York City during our fiscal crisis. Years later, when he was Senator, I invited him to New York City to speak about municipal issues, and he spoke well and frankly. He was a true statesman. It was sad to see him leave the Senate and now to see he has left this earth. His contributions to government were many.

Senator Lugar spoke at a dinner for my named scholarship at Indiana University in the late 70s. His academic background and political success were inspiring! I am different from him politically but always respected him, which is what we need so much more of today. I honor his legacy .

In January 1996 I traveled to from Massachusetts to New Hampshire to volunteer in Senator Lugar's Presidential Primary. I had followed his record in the Senate on international matters, and I knew a good deal about his outstanding achievements in this area. He ran a good campaign and would have been an excellent President. On the day we met in Concord, after introducing myself I asked the Senator what he would like me to do that day; his response was "First, my wife and I are going bowling, and we hope you will join us. Also, we are not familiar with candlepins, so please share some tips for success." Of course I agreed, and we had a very pleasant time. As the campaign progressed, we met often (though not for bowling) and I developed a high admiration for Senator Lugar, not only as a candidate but as a decent human being who wanted only the best for the American people. He was also someone who could listen, and someone whose policy conclusions were always well thought out. He never seemed to get angry at anyone, and he could work with people in either party. His alliance with Senator Sam Nunn on establishing a system to reduce Soviet nuclear weapons needs no explanation. Senator Lugar was the kind of Senator who stood far above pettiness or rancor. May others follow his example.

I had the distinct honor of serving as a Lugar intern, during the Fall of 1985. I had just finished an internship with C-SPAN, so I knew my way around Washington, and mostly, Capitol Hill. It was my twin brothers suggestion to see if Lugar needed a Fall intern....., he did, and I was chosen for this high-profile gig. During my 5 months in the 306 Senate Hart office building, I was fortunate to have done many tasks in the office, including driving the Senator and his Wife, to events around town. I also got to jog down the National Mall with the Senator.., sometimes just he and I, alone. He was always inquisitive about my life, and we had spirited conversations. I was fortunate enough to be in the Senate press chamber, when the US Senate voted to impose sanctions against South Africa, regarding apartheid. This was an historic moment in US history, spearheaded by Lugar.

Ill never forget my time in Washington, and my time with Lugar. He taught me a lot about foreign policy, denuclearization...., and life in general. Rest In Peace, Senator..., you changed the world. - Daniel Goldman

I will always remember my dad, David Nelson, fondly remembering Dick Lugar from Indianapolis. I believe they were classmates somewhere along the way, and grew up, my dad as an engineer with 4 daughters, and Dick a wonderful politician and statesman with 4 sons. Senator Richard Lugar was a towering figure in Hoosier history and one of the greatest statesmen ever to serve in the U.S. Senate. As our longest serving Senator, he worked tirelessly with leaders across the globe to better the state and the country he loved. He was one of the most bipartisan senators America has ever had. He will be missed.

I was honored to have met him and talked to him about my passion for politics and government.

I always enjoyed interviewing Senator Lugar. As a reporter I knew I was getting factual information from him and that our audience was getting the very best information based on his research and intellect. I recall as a young man working on his mayoral campaigns along with my father and uncle who was chief building inspector under Lugar. We were honored when he invited our son Brandon to intern in his DC office. When we went to visit he took time out of his busy day to meet with us. What a great statesman and leader. He was an example of honesty, integrity and great diplomacy. His impact and influence on the youth of Indiana will be felt for decades to come. He truly dedicated himself to a life of service to his fellow women and men. May Our Heavenly Father bless Mrs. Lugar and the Lugar family during this time of need.
