ALVIN COHEN Obituary

Alvin Cheim Cohen Passed away peacefully at the age of 86 with his family by his side on October 3, 2010. Alvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Alvin was born and raised in San Francisco, attended Grant Elementary School, Lowell High School and UC Berkeley and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. His life was centered around his wife, Helene, and their 3 girls at the Cohen family home in Sea Cliff. Alvin went to work for his uncle, Jules M. Sahlein, in 1947 and headed the J.M. Sahlein Music Company from 1971 to 1990. His decades of experiences from the music business, his childhood spent in Marysville with his mother's siblings at his grandfather's orchards and lumber yards and his every day close reading of current events supplied us all with well-told slices of history. Alvin spent his time traveling, playing bridge, dominoes, cheering for the SF 49ers, enjoying magnificent operas and eating wonderful meals, always surrounded by family and friends. Son of the late Helen and Alfred Cohen, Alvin is survived by his daughters and spouses, Roberta (Rusty) Holden, Karen (Harvey) Daniels, Lisa (Ed) Schuller and his adored grandchildren, Alexander Holden, Hava and Adina Daniels, Lauren and Megan Schuller. He also leaves behind his brother Morton (& Janice) Cohen and sister, Susan (& Mark) Oscherwitz with whom he shared a very special relationship along with wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. Alvin lost his beloved wife of 52 years in 2005 and although he enjoyed these last years, he never stopped missing his Dear Helene. Alvin was a life long member of Congregation Emanu-El and the Concordia-Argonaut Club and was a passionate supporter of the SF Opera. His companionship, humor and wit brightened every dinner, domino game, lunch and opera he graced with his friends and family during his full, long and happy life. He will be missed by all who knew him and will live forever in our hearts. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 at 10:30 am at Congregation Emanu-El 2 Lake St, SF. The family requests donations in Alvin's memory be made to Congregation Emanu-El, UCSF Medical Center Oncology Dept. or to a charity of your choice. SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPEL (415) 921-3636
