Burrill Crohn Obituary

Burrill L. Crohn Jan. 11, 1934 - Oct. 29, 2021 Burrill Crohn passed away peacefully with family by his side after years living with multiple myeloma. Burrill was born in France, moved at age six with his parents to New York City, where he grew up, graduated from Goddard College, and after many years, went to Woodstock where he enjoyed a wonderful community of friends. In 2013 Burrill immigrated to California to be with West Coast family and good friends. Burrill was an accomplished documentary filmmaker whose work about jazz has been televised on major networks all over the world, shown in numerous film festivals, and is archived in the Library of Congress. After Women in Jazz, Burrill won a Cable Ace Award in 1987 (now an Emmy) for his History of Jazz series. He recently made Playing With Parkinson's about virtuoso guitarist Sangeeta Michael Berardi. Burrill was a multidimensional, creative person who followed his heart to music, psychology, art, film, poetry, nature and Shamanism. More than anything, he valued his friendships. His humor, warmth, love of jazz, and nature walks with friends were part of everyday life. He played trumpet, his faithful companion, every day. Burrill is survived by his former wife Madeleine Crohn; cousins Laurie Roth, Joshua Bastacky, Jacob Bastacky, and Susie Dickler; and close friends everywhere. There will be a Zoom memorial service on January 11, 2022 at the Pacific ocean as he requested. Contact [email protected] for link. His ashes will be spread at his beloved Cooper Lake in spring. Donations can be made to San Geronimo Valley Community Center where he enjoyed years of great ping pong.

I met Burrill at the San Geronimo gym mostly on Thursdays for senior ping pong and experienced him as somebody who was very determined to learn a new skill. And he was relentless in his pursuit. Given that he was my senior by 24 years, he for his own reason seemed to have decided that I could show him something that was valuable to him. He was the most persistent of all the players asking for at least a half an hour or possibly more to improve his ping pong skills, which I always felt flattered to grant him. I have experienced him as an honest, graceful and determined player who came across as exceptionally authentic, which I particularly appreciated. Beyond that we got to talk about our mutual interests such as Jazz and faith healing, and last but not least the art of table tennis.
