Cathey Ragucci Obituary

Cathey Ragucci 1958 -2012 Cathey Ragucci, 53, died at home, surrounded by family, on June 2, 2012. She lived her life on her own terms, as she wanted to, and was never afraid of doing things differently. Cathey was born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area, graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in 1975. She attended Bethany College before graduating from Miami University of Ohio with a B.A in Psychology in 1980. After college she took a 20,000 mile solo road trip to see the country and decide where she wanted to live. She settled in Marin County, California. She had intended to go for a PhD in Psychology, but decided against it because "they measure the therapists by the square inch out here!" She worked in software testing for many years, then, interested as always in helping others, she studied at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare and received her Master's degree in May 1993. She worked for several years as a social worker in a foster family agency and then as a therapist and hypnotherapist. When she developed an aggressive type of breast cancer, Cathey opted to treat it with surgery, but no radiation or chemotherapy. She courageously, acting on her belief system, used a variety of alternative therapies and survived five years--as long as those opting for chemotherapy and radiation. She enjoyed singing and art of all kinds, especially jewelry making and working with clay. She loved being out in nature and had a passion for animals and wildlife of all kinds. She is survived by her husband, David Henderson; mother, Ruth Ragucci; brother, Sam Ragucci; sister-in-law Barbara Woods; niece, Amanda Woods; nephew, Alex Ragucci and step-daughter Rebecca Henderson.

Cathey is a star in my book- a beautiful person inside and out. Her smile was warm and her eyes engaging, her heart was full of love and laughter. She shared a true compassion for others and I feel fortunate to have been on the receiving end of her kindness and generosity as her long-time friend.

Still remembering Cathey. Very nice to have these reminders. All of my memories of Miami U. come back. Thank you, Cathey.

I worked with Cathey at 'Together,' an off-campus crisis intervention center in Oxford, where we were both students. Cathey was a year ahead of me. I was enamored with Cathey; what a beautiful, compassionate and empathetic person! I remember that she left to 'go west' after graduation, then had second thoughts and turned around in Oklahoma, returning to Ohio. Obviously she went back and had a very memorable life, with loved ones and a career. I remember Cathey with great fondness and am glad to share my memories of her, although I see that I did in Nov 2012. - Steve Roos

Cathy and I grew up together and met in Cleveland Heights High School. We were friends for a long time and took karate together in our senior year of highs school. Primarily because her boyfriend was the karate instructor. She was a very kind and free spirited person who did not have much use for conventional wisdom or customs. Thus her disdain for Chemotherapy, I supposed. Kind to all she met, she was one of the bright spots and good souls in the universe. She will be deeply missed and often remembered very fondly!! I miss her terribly!!

Cathey and I were student counselors at Together, Inc. in Oxford, Ohio. I remember her as a warm and friendly and beautiful person. I remember when she began her cross-country journey to find her passion, turned around in Oklahoma and returned to Ohio. Had a crush on her. I'm so glad she found a place to settle down and thrive. How you will be missed.

I met Cathey online, we were both dealing with cancer and shared emails about our options and what we were doing. In March I got an email that her cancer had spread and she wouldn't be sending any more emails. Been thinking about her ever since, and dealing with my own situation. Just decided to look up her name on the web! Im sad that she's gone. I appreciate her and miss her. God Bless you Cathey, thank you.

I had the good fortune to meet Cathey in Cincinnati soon after we both graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She was always cheerful, talented, honest, and had a great sense of humor. She visited me in Colorado during her driving trip to decide where she wanted to live, and I visited her once when she returned to Cleveland to visit her mother. Last fall I was fortunate to visit her in San Francisco and meet David. She was loving and cheerful and kind-spirited always. We kept in touch off and on by phone and letters. I miss her deeply yet know her spirit is full of love and laughter even now. THANK YOU CATHEY FOR EVERYTHING YOU GAVE TO ME! Sue Jasbeck Steinberg (Cincinnati)
