MAX BLUMENFELD Obituary

Max Blumenfeld Passed away peacefully at his home in San Rafael on May 22, 2010. A native of Marin County, he was 73. The son of Nate and Ruth (nee Lehman) Blumenfeld, he was born in San Rafael, CA in 1936, and spent his early years working for his family in the theater businessthe Blumenfeld's owned a circuit of theaters including the historic Sequoia in Mill Valleyuntil he forged his own path developing bowling centers in the Bay Area and Sacramento. He was the proprietor of the Albany Bowl among others. Max loved his bi-monthly poker game and was an avid golfer who spent the happiest times of his life in Rancho Mirage, California on the golf course. He was known for his wry sense of humor and genuine smile and will be remembered by his many friends as one of the nicest and kindest men they ever met. He had a quiet, gentle presence and was a dedicated son, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Valerie (nee Harris); his daughter Pamela Ortiz and son-in-law, Diego Ortiz, of Walnut Creek and their children Juliana and Nicolas; his son Jack Blumenfeld and daughter-in-law, Jessica, of San Francisco and their children Isabella and Alexie; his step son, Jeff Anixter and daughter-in-law, Gina Anixter of Granite Bay, and their children Alyssa and Natalie and his step-daughter Shelley Anixter of San Francisco. Donations in Max Blumenfeld's honor can be made to Jewish Family Services of Marin or San Francisco or ORT America of New York.

Dear Valerie and family,My sincere condolences on Max's passing.My name is Moshe Blumenfeld and I am Max's second cousin.My father was Nathan Blumenfeld(deceased in 2007) son of Moses Blumenfeld of Shineva Poland.Max's grandfather also named Max (Mordche)Blumenfeld was Moses older brother.It was due to the kindness of Aunt Becky (Mordche's wife) and son Joseph Blumenfeld that my father and his sister Ruth were brought to San Rafael a mere six months before the war and thus spared the horrors of the Holocaust.If you care to contact me you can email me at [email protected] my condolences on your loss.

Dear Valarie and family. I am deeply saddened by the announcement of Max's death. He was a dear cousin and I shall cherish the many memories I have of our times together as children, through our teens, young adulthood, and through to our mature years. My only regret is not keeping in closer contact throughout our lives. All of my family members and I send our condolences to all of you. With great affection to you all, Ken Young and family.
