MEL STEINBERG Obituary

Dr. Mel Steinberg 1935-2010 Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mel died at home Saturday, October 23, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was a mensch with a huge heart and a mischievous sparkle. He was a teacher of life through truth, acceptance, giving and forgiving. His core value was to always try to do what was right, and he created his unique map for life with the courage to take risks in the face of formidable challenges. His love for his family and friends was deep and unqualified. He traveled the world and greeted people with trust, respect, and a sense of adventure. He went above and beyond to support those he loved. Almost anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him would describe how freely he gave of who he was. As a tenured professor at Antioch College, he encouraged and guided his students with his love of mathematics. As a numismatist, he changed the field through his many notable contributions to preservation of world history. His life was a lesson on how to be a husband and father, how to keep history alive, and how to seek common cause through friendship, kindness and humor. Many will remember his large body of achievements. His wife Gail, sister Gloria, children Shira, Jeremy, Seth and Liza, grandchildren Leah, Kai, Jorden, YaYa, Evan, Jacob, and many friends here and in every corner of the world will miss his loving heart. Services will be held at Congregation Kol Shofar, 215 Blackfield Drive, Tiberon at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, October 26th. Burial will follow at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetary, 2500 5th Ave., San Rafael, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Poverty Law Center, www.SPLC.org

Very early in my dealing with Mel, I was in the US Army and president of the Heidelberg German-American Coin Club and organizing its shows. I had several prominent European dealers show up but no Americans. I learned Mel was going to be in London before or after our show and requested he set up at a free table for I would save for him. He was worried that he would not profit enough from the show but he came and sold a large amount of paper money. He was very happily surprised and the club became much more known to the world because of him. Mel came when many other American dealers did not come to our shows.

After almost 17 years I still can't bring my self to delete our correspondence. We were friends and colleagues in banknote business. I miss Mel a lot and think of him very often.

I had been thinking about the professor at Antioch who created the wonderful "Real Good Food Co-op". This was my first participation in a food co-op and it enriched my life forever after. I had searched the web more than once in the past year, hoping to find the Dr. Steinberg associated with this, but I could not remember his name. Tonight, "Mel" popped into my head. I do think this may be him, for he was a man rich in goodness and generosity.
I remember his young son had gone over the handlebars on his bike and Dr. Steinberg wasted no time in taking him by plane that night to Calif. for help in saving his life by his brother from what turned out to be a ruptured pancreas.
If this is not that same Dr. Steinberg, please forgive my intrusion into your guestbook. If this is, please accept my sincere thanks and appreciation on behalf of all Antioch students whose lives he touched to such great benefit.

Dear Jeremy,

My interactions with Mel were limited to a few phonecalls and emails.

It makes me very sad to have read about the passing of Mel. His kindness and energy were wonderful to experience. I always enjoyed it when he was at a show and how he could involve your interest through his quiet enthusiasm. I guess one way to say it is that he had true style.

I am truly saddened to hear about Mel. I always enjoyed visiting him at the shows I attended. Part of him will live on in the items he helped me acquire for my research and collections.

It will not be the same without Mel to talk with at numismatic shows around the world. I will be missing him. But he has left a good son behind by the name of Jeremy, and many other family members who loved him. Have a good trip to the "other" side as we used to say during my war.

My sincerest condolences to Jeremy, Gail and all other family members. I owe Mel a great deal for enriching my paper money collection but even more for enriching my life through our common interests in sports, politics, and mathematics. Mel was a great businessman but an even greater person. I will miss him dearly.
