Richard James Whiteside

1939 - 2014

Richard James Whiteside (Jim) 10/10/1939 - 4/10/2014 Jim, the son of the late Donald and Mary Whiteside, was born and educated in England, where he became a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. In 1963 he emigrated to America with his wife Dorothy and eldest son David. They lived in Oakland where their son Darren was born, until settling in Mill Valley in 1968. Jim worked for C. Norman Peterson Company and was President of E.H. Morril Company, before joining David at Whiteside Concrete Construction Corp. Jim was a talented pianist and from an early age, loved to entertain, as a soloist and in groups, with his beautiful chords. Recently, he enjoyed playing with the Jim Whiteside Trio and at Jazz sessions with his musician friends. Jim's favorite sport was Soccer, both as a player in his younger days and a spectator. He had played in the San Francisco League for the Scots, Glens and Teutonia and in the Marin league for the Mayflower Old Boys. He was an avid follower of the English Premier Soccer League. Jim was the co-founder of Youth Soccer in Mill Valley. He also enjoyed playing Tennis and Bocce Ball. Jim loved to travel the world and had to have his bi-annual fix of a trip to Baja California. He loved to read and write under his pen name Richard Mowbray. Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy, his sons David (Michelle) and Darren (Michelle G), his six grandchildren, Kate, Nicole, Michael, Sophia, Bryana and Bradley. Brother John (Diana), sister Janet (Eric), Sisters-in-Law Annette and Jennifer, Aunty Peggy, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends in England, Australia and America, and his best "four legged" friend, Joey. The Whiteside Family would like to thank the Southern Marin Paramedics, Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Marin General Hospital and the Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital for their tender care of Jim during his hours of need.
