Robert Abeling Obituary

Bob Abeling Robert August Abeling passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday, May 22, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol; his son, Bill; and his grandchildren: Melissa, Brendan, Courtney, Sarah, Megan, Will, Brynna, Teagan, and Tessa; and his expectant great-grandchild. Bob was born and raised in San Francisco to parents August and Margaret, and it was in the city he met and married Carol. He later moved to Novato with his wife and children, Bill and Barbara (deceased), in the 1960s, where they built their family home. Bob was a longtime member of Our Lady of Loretto in Novato, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a grateful member of AA for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Army, and in the 1970s was on committees of Novato Little League and Boy Scouts. Bob was on the Marin County Grand Jury for four years, was a past president of the Homeowners' Association, and he worked very hard to keep Indian Valley rural. He worked as a carpenter at S.F. General Hospital for 17 years. He was a fan of the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved the Olympics and attended the Games from 1976-2008. He traveled extensively, first in a VW bus and later in the RV with his family, and went annually to Yosemite. Bob also enjoyed visiting with many residents at the Yountville Veteran's Home, and he regularly organized blood drives. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at OLL Church in Novato at 10:30 a.m., followed by a procession to Calvary Cemetery in Petaluma. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Wounded Warrior Fund.

Dear Carol,
Our heartfelt condolences to you, Bill and your family at the loss of Bob. You have been great neighbors over the many years that you have known my grandparents, parents and us. As a kid it was great to see you at my sister's birthday parties and more recently, it has been a pleasure to meet up with you and Bob and hear the latest local news and to learn of his experiences on the Grand Jury. Please take good care and may God bless.

My sincere condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting your father and grandfather on a project for our neighborhood Novato Heights, which overlooks Indian Valley. Though he was initially my opposition, he graciously heard me out. He ended up being instrumental in our neighborhood obtaining permission to move forward with a critically needed sewer project, after meticulously examining the evidence I presented. He was such a nice man. Even as an adversary to my project, he was always so kind and gracious.

Bob was my faithful cousin who kept contact with me. His father was my Godfather, my mother's brother, Uncle Gus. I would welcome Bob's frequent phone calls. May he be welcomed by the ever faithful Lord Jesus. Fr. Al Grosskopf, S.J.
