Robert Tanem Obituary

Robert M. "Bob" Tanem July 1, 1930 July 10, 2022 With his ever-sharp mind, Robert "Bob" Tanem passed away with his three children at his side. His 92-year-old body could not keep up. Dad was a wonderful provider for us all and contributed his passion to the county of Marin, its gardens, the community and everyone he met. He was a legend because of his giving nature and through his family's business, Tanem's Garden Centers in Santa Venetia and Tiburon. His infectious laugh, even heard in church, carried him into retirement as "America's Happy Gardener" as he hosted "Bob Tanem in the Garden" on KSFO Radio. His "side" career began in 1980 with guest appearances on KGO Radio and on Bay Area TV, informing viewers on gardening. He won numerous awards for his radio show, including those endowed by the Garden Writers Association and Garden Communicators International. Bob leaves behind his children, Bill (Abby), Kathy (Brian) McBride, Edie (Juan) Morales, their kids, Nick, Will, Robert, Miguel, and great-grandchildren, Martin, Dean and Solomon. His wife of 63 years, Beverley, the extraordinary special education teacher at San Rafael High, passed away in 2017. Dad was a principled man who followed the Boy Scout Oath. Born in Placerville and raised in Willits, his humble upbringing influenced his lifestyle. In 1986, Marin BSA Council awarded Bob the Silver Beaver, which is only bestowed on a select few. He served on the Marin BSA Council, led Boy Scouts across high Sierra trails, took a group canoeing in Wisconsin, and ventured to the National Jamboree. His community involvement had no bounds. He was a Cultural Commissioner with the Marin County Fair and influenced the adoption of a "one-price" admission. From the 60s, Bob built garden exhibits for Marin, Sonoma, and Alameda County Fairs, including at the Marin Art & Garden Center in Ross. His gardening passion continued into retirement at Homeward Bound: New Beginnings where he helped convert a parking lot to a self-sufficient garden. In 2015, he was awarded the Peter E. Haas Community Service Award at his alma mater, U.C. Berkeley for this work. His commitment to the garden and his dear friend, David Jordan, never ended. Bob's career in the nursery industry didn't start with academics. A member of Acacia Fraternity, Bob graduated from Cal in 1953 with a degree in political science and married Bev shortly after. After serving in the Army, he started in sales. By happenstance, he made an offer in 1960 on the property that would become the family business. Faith and luck supported his venture and he grew the business. Later, he would purchase the Tiburon nursery, with a signed commitment to pay over time. Bob prospered in trustworthiness. He sold the Santa Venetia property in 2002, which allowed him to enjoy more of life. Bev and Bob caught up with long overdue vacation trips to Europe and beyond. Bob will be missed by many, including his family, his many communities and his lifelong friends. As per his wishes, please buy flowers and help small businesses grow. Please also consider donating to the New Beginnings Center c/o Homeward Bound of Marin - Hbofm.org. The family would like to extend its appreciation to Hospice of Marin and Visiting Angels for their comforting services. On a parting note, his saved fortune was "Always be modest and be proud of it." Memorial services are scheduled at Saint Anthony of Padua, 1000 Cambridge Street, Novato for Friday, July 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

I left the Bay Area in 2008. I listened to Bob religiously before leaving and a few times after but life changes when you move. Now in Wyoming after leaving SJ, there is something eating my flowers. I thought of Bob then it hit me that it has been 18 years since I left CA. Sorry to hear Bob has passed as well as his wife. He always was a cheerful guy on the radio. Sounded so much younger than his age. He is one of my good memories of my 23 years in CA. RIP.

Greatly miss Bobs "In The Garden" radio program. His extensive experience and his willing to research and bring new information to his listeners kept his radio program fresh and something to look forward to every week..and of course his wit and sense of humor added lots of texture and nuance to his conversations. When Johnny Carson left the Tonight Show...he took the Tonight Show with him...the same can be said about Bob Tanem...there is simply no replacement for Bob Tanem or Johnny Carson...Rest In Peace...

I greatly enjoyed Bob's radio program. A vast wealth of gardening information every weekend. His upbeat positive view on life was evident in every utterance. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and his "radio audience" family. God Bless Bob and thanks for the memories and advice...

Oh, I just found out that Bob has passed away. I worked for Bob at the Santa Venetia Nursery for a few years when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. He was a very positive influence on me and I regret not having seen him for a long time. Wherever Bob is now I wish him all the best!

Vf-11 and beneficial nematodes are just two of the gardening tips I picked up from Bob over the years. I had the honor of meeting both Bob and Bev at the now closed Cupertino Orchard Supply. I bought copies of all of his books which he graciously signed for me. I never emailed him a question without a prompt helpful response. We as a community were very lucky to have had Bob and Bev for as long as we did. I wish the family peace.

Sending my belated condolences to Edie and the Tanem family. I crossed paths with Bob numerous times while teaching Environmental Horticulture at Santa Rosa Junior College. His big smile, positive energy and kindness always uplifted me at a meeting or nursery get-together. Bob brightened my days, which means he brightened my life. I am grateful that I knew him.

Sincere condolences to Bob's family. Smart, sharing, kind, thoughtful, humble and funny, he will always be in our hearts. We still treasure the Dec. 31, 1993 "Commuter Times" article he shared with us. He wrote: "I've not seen too many garden articles on front pages. Perhaps they had nothing else to print." May he and Bev Rest in Peace for all eternity in that beautiful garden in the sky.

My sincere condolences to to the Tanem family. My grandfather, who passed many years ago, introduced me to Bob's show when I was a teenager. I have listened ever since, which has been every Sunday for 20 plus years. I learned so, so much from him. When I learned of his passing, I spent the day in My garden, thinking fondly of him. Rest in Peace, you sweet, sweet man.

To the family, I just learned this morning Bob passed away. I am so sad. Bob was always the center point at all the family gatherings. He always was of good cheer and some of my fondest memories as a child was seeing Bob and the family on our summer vacations to SanLeandro. God bless Bob and his family. Love you all!!!

A beautiful soul has taken his place in heaven, making our evening skies a little brighter. Rest in Peace, Bob Tanem, or, as his Norwegian forefathers would say "Hvil i Fred". With deep felt sympathy,

On behalf of the "K's" I extend our condolences . Loosing a parent is like nothing else. His memory and influence will carry on through each of you. As a kid I was always intrigued by your family who had the most beautiful place to live . Nestled just beyond our track houses was your little bit o heaven. God Bless Bob and Bev two stalwart , talented generous humans.

No doubt, the garden of Heaven has received another Angel, and caretaker. It's comforting to know that he and Bev are in each other's arms once more. May the memories of Bob live on through his wonderful family and all those he touched in person, and over the airwaves these many years. Rest in Peace Happy Gardener!

My sincerest condolences to all the Tanems during this tender time. Bob, Bev, Bill, Edie and Kathy and my family were fence line neighbors for 20 years in Santa Venetia, where we developed a deep and abiding love for one another's families. Blessings and love to Bob on this, his next adventure and to the whole family, during this time of grief, repose and reflection.
