Joseph Short Obituary

Joseph "Joe" S. Short

MARION - Joseph "Joe" S. Short, age 88 of Marion, passed away on Tuesday June 19, 2018 surrounded by his family at his home.

Joe was born on March 5, 1930 in Fort Wayne, IN, the son of E.J. and Mabel (Neuhouser) Short. Joe graduated from Seville High School in the class of 1948. He continued his education, graduating from Ashland University with a Master's degree. While attending Ashland University, Joe lettered in both football and baseball.

One afternoon, while coaching a track meet, a beautiful young woman caught Joe's eye. It wasn't long after that the two started dating and Joe was united in marriage to Nancy L. Shiley on August 24, 1958 in Bascom, Ohio.

Not long after Joe began his teaching and coaching career, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean War. When he was honorably discharged, Joe resumed his position at Bloomville Township School.

He was a man of many talents and responsibilities as an educator. He not only taught and coached, but he also was an elementary and high school principal at Bloomville Township School in Seneca County, high school principal at Montpelier Schools and was a superintendent at Millcreek West Unity and Pleasant Schools. He retired as county superintendent from Knox County Schools. He loved sports and coached most of his adult life. He was instrumental in the development of the summer softball league for Pleasant Schools.

It is no surprise with his love of sports that he was an avid Ohio State fan along with any Cleveland sports team. He liked to be outside and enjoyed many rounds of golf. Joe loved to read and was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marion. His proudest moments were the times that he and Nancy were sitting together in the stands cheering on their children and grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife Nancy L. Short; children: Stephen (Laura) Short, Sue (Bob) Snyder and Scott (Anna) Short; grandchildren: Matthew (Alyssa) Short, Nathan (Amanda) Short, Kate Snyder, Kelsey Snyder, Jonathan Veyrier and Rosana Veyrier; great grandchildren: Abigail Short, Madison Short and Molly Short; sisters: Vicki (Dennis) Kunick and June (the late Ralph) Thompson; brother-in-law John Kneeland and sister-in-law Pat Short; 19 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Joan (Rev. Ben, Jr.) Black, Donna Kneeland, Claudine (Ray) Wojtko and Roger Short.

Visitation will be Friday June 29, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 143 S. Prospect St., Marion from 4PM to 7PM; Memorial service will be Saturday at the church at 10:30AM with Pastor Rob Howard officiating; burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stephen J. Short Scholarship fund, c/o Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 1 South Main Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.

I couldnt resist expressing my condolences once more.Mr.Short was a great administrator and commanded a very high level of respect at Pleasant High School. Our graduating class appreciated the fact that he attended our reunions. He was always a pleasure to run into after graduating from Pleasant. He always went out of his way to speak and converse at the golf course or anywhere else.Even when I was 50 years of age I couldn't bring myself to address him as anything but Mr.Short.My condolences once again to his family.May he rest in peace.

My condolences to the Short family;Joe became superintendent when I was a senior at Pleasant High School. He was a firm but fair superintendent and after I graduated I often would bump into him at the old Mar O Del golf course. We became friends and even though I would have liked to have know him better he was an easy person to understand.Very friendly and always made it a point to attend our class reunions whenever he could.A class person and a privilege to have know him!RIP Mr. Short
