Richard Lawson Obituary

Richard W. Lawson

Marion - Richard W. Lawson,64, of Marion, passed away peacefully January 13, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 3, 1954, to the late Richard H. and Mildred (Wiley) Lawson. Rick was a life-long Marionite. He was an All-Ohio defensive lineman for Pleasant High School's 1971 State Champion football team. Of this, Rick was very proud. He cultured many friendships playing softball (on many winning teams) for Grolls and the G&R. However, as an avid lover of sports, Rick was most proud of participating in and coaching his sons, Jay and Ryan. He was passionate and committed to his sons and never missed a game. He touched the lives of many of son's friends and teammates. Whether at Lincoln Park, Baker Middle School or Harding High School- you always saw "Big Rick" and loved to hear him yelling his words of "encouragement".

After Rick retired from Showplace Rental, he began his second career as a full-time golf cart driver at his beloved Harbor Winds Marina in Marblehead.

When not accidentally catching Fish Ohio walleye with Captain Ron Garver, Rick patrolled the grounds exchanging gossip, offering Big Rick wisdom and hollering at "Eck" to bring him a Bud!

Those who knew Rick will miss his kindness, warm smile and his ability to make you laugh. He loved his wife, Elaine and his sons, Jay and Ryan. He enjoyed telling good stories with his surviving brother, Doug and greatly missed his sister Lynnie, who preceded him in death.

Rick was the greatest Grandpa ever to Lilly and Harper, with coffee cups to prove it. It was impossible to be out and about in Marion and not run into someone that loved and respected Big Rick. He will be greatly missed.

Rick is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elaine, his sons, Jay Lawson and Ryan (Jenny) Lawson, his granddaughters, Lilly and Harper, his brother, Doug (Jodee) Lawson and several nieces and nephews. Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred, his father Richard and his sister Lynn (Lawson) Persinger.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 3 - 6 PM at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will begin at 6 PM at the funeral home with Pastor David Baker officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Ohio Health Hospice. On line condolences may be expressed to the family at www.boydbornfuneralhome.com

I remember watching Rick and the other lineman with Coach Kay when I was 11 years old. He was a great football player and a nice guy. Still remember his touchdown run.

To Rick's family and Doug,
When I read Rick,s obituary it reminded me of our similarities from sports, bad knees, coaching kids, loving Lake Erie, Capital University and especially nicknaming everyone. Any trip from Richwood up Rt 4 to Marion went past your home where family reunions are fondly recalled. We will miss you and our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Cousin Joe Wiley

To Eck and family;Joyce and I are going to miss Rick very much.We had great times with you all and are so sorry that our grand kids and life in general caused us to drift apart. There was never a dull moment around him and the most memorable thing, if you could narrow it down, was his ability to come up with nicknames for all the people he came in contact with.He was one of the best friends a person could have.May he rest in peace and I'm sure he will entertain the troops where he is headed! Cant think of him without smiling! We love you.

Elaine & Family: May I express my sincere condolences to you. I fondly remember the times I spent with my dad, Rob Higley, and Rick in Canada when I was growing up. Not to mention all of the stories my dad shared with me about he and Rick during the glory days of Pleasant. Good times.

Rick was something special. A genuine light in the dark.

May God bless you during this difficult time.

Elaine, Doug and Family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Rick's passing. We all went to Pleasant School together. I was good friends w Lynne. Terry Nash Brian told Annette Lowe Staley and she told me today. We were all 4 friends. I used to see Rick at the YMCA a few yrs back when i went for therapy for my knees. Then of course saw you all at Lynne's funeral more recently. I'll let my brothers Dave and Keith know. We lost my Dad, Bill Burley, this past September. I lost my husband, Eric, a yr ago. Both from stroke. My mom, Margaret, is doing pretty well at 84 yrs old. It's so hard getting older and losing our loved ones and our good friends. Take care, Lee Ann Burley Derugen
