Dieter was born December 31, 1931 to Heinrich and Lisbeth (Westphal) Voss in Ostseebad Brunshaupten, a small resort destination on the Baltic Sea, in what would later become East Germany. After graduating from high school, Dieter began his university studies in Rostock. After the war he and his family fled to the West, where he pursued his premedical training in West Berlin and his medical training at the University of Freiburg, earning his MD Degree in 1958. He then came to the US as a fellow of the Ventner Foundation, and completed additional training in Internal Medicine in Lawrence, MA and Cardiology at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 1966 he moved with his young family to Marshfield, where he became the 90th physician to join the rapidly expanding Marshfield Clinic and established the CCU Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was a kind and gentle physician and a well-respected Cardiologist who, in addition to many other accomplishments was, was instrumental in pioneering the use of coronary artery angioplasty for treatment of coronary artery disease at the Marshfield Clinic.

He retired from active practice in 1996, but continued to be interested in the constantly changing practice of medicine. He was also an avid sailor and loved nothing more than summer days spent on the water with friends and family.

Dieter was an active member of many organizations including: Elks, Wood County Medical Society, Wisconsin Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and American College of Physicians.

Dieter is lovingly survived by his wife: Ruth of Marshfield and her daughters Tammie and Theresa Weinfurtner both of St. Paul, MN; his two sisters: Lori of Uetersen, Germany and Sigrid of Marl, Germany; his sons: Stephan (Jeanette) Voss of Boston, Peter (Jill) Voss of Eagan, MN, and Thomas Voss of New Orleans; as well as three grandchildren: Christopher (26), Stephanie (24) and Annika (22), all of Boston.

Dieter's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital for the care and compassion shown to both Dieter and his family.
