Mary Tauscher Obituary

Tauscher, Dr. Mary Rose

MILWAUKEE - Dr. Mary Rose Tauscher, age 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at her home in Milwaukee. Mary Rose was born in Milladore, WI on August 27, 1933 to George and Dora (Haasl) Tauscher. She was an educator for 32 years in music, guidance and counseling, and administration. A strong proponent of education throughout her life, she taught at all levels from elementary through university. Mary Rose earned a Ph.D. in Urban Education from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee on May 22, 1977. She later joined the faculty of Milwaukee Area Technical College where she taught for 14 years until her retirement in 1995. Mary Rose enjoyed traveling and, as part of a college team, traveled eight times to the Northwest Territories of Canada to live among and study the culture of the Eskimos. She developed a lifelong affinity for Inuit language and culture that inspired the names of her beloved Shih Tzu dogs and the name NANUK on her customized license plate. She enjoyed sharing travel photos and mementos with her many friends and family members, tending her garden, and giving generously to all who knew her.

Mary Rose is survived by her siblings, Anna Rudy, of IN, Norbert Tauscher, of Wisconsin Rapids, Gladys Kobishop, of West Allis, Laurene (Jerry) Braunsky, of Auburndale, Agnes (Fritz) Link, of Wisconsin Rapids, Father Donald Tauscher, of Collegeville, MN, Doris Tauscher, of Wisconsin Rapids and Leon (Beth) Tauscher, of Denver, CO; brother-in-law, Robert Pongratz, of Auburndale; sister-in-law, Dianne Tauscher, of Auburndale; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Rose is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Dennis Tauscher; a sister Rita Pongratz; two brothers-in-law, Fred Rudy and Harlan Kobishop; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Tauscher.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 5866 Main Street in Auburndale with Fr. Jesse Burish officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family would like to thank Horizon Hospice for their loving care of Mary Rose and especially her nurse, Megan. Mary Rose was both lovely and loving. As a student in elementary school in Iowa, she was an example to me of how working and loving combine for a superior outcome. She started my school's first orchestra, a monumental task which she accomplished undaunted. Her students and her orchestra loved her, and she gave us all a superior example of how to live.

Mary Tauscher, or "Aunt Mary" as we called her, was a role model in my childhood when I was growing up. My family lived in a suburb of Milwaukee just a few minutes from her and she was at every family event we had. Her work ethic was amazing and she had an undying passion for education. She was extremely independent which I respected as a young girl, also wanting an education and successful career. Aunt Mary was extremely generous and kind and had a great sense of humor. We loved listening to her stories of her travels and adventures and her fierce love of the Packers and hockey. She embraced and encouraged our children when the next generation came along. She touched all our lives and will be dearly missed.

My prayers and thoughts go out to the Tauscher family. Mary Rose or Aunt Mary as we affectionately called her was an extraordinary lady. At holidays, birthdays, and major life events, she was always there with a welcoming smile, warm hug and words of praise. She saw the best in everyone. For the McBride, Borgealt & Smejkal families, Aunt Mary will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
