Ferretta Hodge Crummie Belcher

Ferretta Hodge Crummie Belcher, 84, of Fifth Street, Martinsville, Va., departed from this life on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Mulberry Creek Assisted Living, Martinsville, Va. Born on December 8, 1937, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Rufus Hodge Sr. and Nancy Spencer Hodge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Belcher Sr.; one son, Arnold Vinci Crummie; and two brothers, Rufus Hodge Jr. and Robert S. Hodge.

Ferretta was a Carver High School graduate and then attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. She went on to work for the Henry County Public School System as a teacher for 32 years. She was a member and Elder of Fayette Street Christian Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Officer of Election Official, Bridge Club and Garden Club.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include one daughter, Valerie (Richard) Johnson of Alpharetta, Ga.; one son, John Henry Crummie Jr. of Ga.; one sister, Amanda Hodge Redd of Martinsville, Va.; three grandchildren, Arnold Vinci Crummie II, Hannah Nicole Johnson, and Lauryn Noelle Johnson; one sister-in-law, Carolyn (Robert) Hodge, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Omega Omega Ceremony will begin at 1:45 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at Fayette Street Christian Church, Martinsville, Va. A burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, Martinsville, Va. A public viewing will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Hairston Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. All other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home, 612 Fifth Street, Martinsville, VA 24112. In accordance with the CDC, face coverings, and social distancing are required.

Ms. Crummie was my 6th grade teacher at John Redd Smith Elementary. I will always remember her for her love of plants that filled our classroom and her wonderful smelling perfume. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
