It is with great sadness to share that Alfred W. "Fred" Stoddard passed away after a brief illness at Holyoke Hospital on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Fred was a life-long resident of Agawam and Feeding Hills, and the son of the late Inez (Squazza) and Ernest Stoddard.
He worked for the Town of Agawam Water Department dedicating twenty years, retiring as a Foreman in 2019. Fred continued staying busy at ACE Auto Body, his home away from home, where he was a faithful volunteer and family member. He was a good friend to many who looked forward to coming to the shop to find Freddy there, ready to answer questions about on-going projects. He was a man of many interests, from farming with his Uncle Eddie Squazza where he was instilled with Eddie's mindset of "doing something for the boys," to becoming a welder and repo man just to learn new skills. Fred served in the military for six years as a Sargeant, a Green Beret, in the 82th Airborne and the United States Army. He was a brilliant man and could solve any problem. Freddy helped his uncle Eddie with the details of donating his 65-acre farm on Main Street in Agawam to the state for the now Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where Eddie's wish of "doing something for the boys" was fulfilled of somehow helping all those who served during war time and in the military. Freddy will also be remembered for the hours he spent and joy he found tending to his vast plantings in his yard that needed his daily care. He will truly be missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy (Gregitis) Stoddard, Steven Melanson who was like his brother, good friends who were family: Steven's wife Lisa and their daughter Payten, Dale Melanson, and his neighbor Eddie Cecchi; and many extended family and friends.
To honor Fred, visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 4:00-7:00pm at Colonial Forastiere Funeral & Cremation, 985 Main Street in Agawam. Burial will be in the spring in Agawam Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's honor to Friends of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Agawam (FOAVC), PO Box 3, Feeding Hills, MA 01030.
