Eugene Meunier Obituary

Eugene "Gene" E. Meunier, Jr.
1990 - 2023
Chicopee
Gene Meunier, Jr. (USCG E4) passed away peacefully on July 6, 2023 in Alameda, California, while proudly serving in the United States Coast Guard. He was born in Springfield, MA to Eugene "Gene" Meunier, Sr. and Sarah "Sally" J. Meunier. He was educated in Holyoke schools prior to moving to Chicopee, where he graduated from Chicopee Comprehensive High School. He then attended STCC prior to enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He was employed as an electronic technician and a proud member of the Color Guard in the USCG at the time of his passing. In his youth, Gene loved sports of all kinds and enjoyed playing hockey for Chicopee Comp High School. Gene adored his siblings; he was an amazing brother to his younger sister Mary Kate and his disabled brother Jimmy, whom he cherished and was fiercely protective of. Of Gene's many passions in life which included music, writing and playing guitar, he found his greatest joys hanging out with his sister, volunteering with The Special Olympics and spending time with his family and friends. In his later years he enjoyed hiking, mountain biking, and sailing in the San Francisco Bay with his Coast Guard family.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Eugene E. Meunier; grandmother, Mary T. Meunier (Moriarty); grandfather, George F. Harris; grandmother, Catherine T. Harris (Moriarty); an aunt, Kathleen Hamelin; an uncle, Thomas J. Harris; an uncle, Kevin MacNeal; a cousin, John MacNeal, and godfather, Gary Hartling. Gene is survived by his father, Eugene E. Meunier, Sr. and mother, Sarah J. Meunier; sister, Mary Kathleen Meunier, and brother, James H. Meunier; uncles: George F. Harris, Jr., Timothy J. Harris, and Edward L. Harris, and aunt and godmother, Charlene M. MacNeal. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 9:00 am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Burial will follow in Forestdale Cemetery West, Rock Valley Road, Holyoke. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 21st from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Greater Springfield Special Olympics, 49 Sedgelia Street, Springfield, MA or to Special Olympics, 512 Forest Road, Westborough, MA.

Gene and I were friends at Comp, I shared so many memories hanging out with our friends and listening to music. After I moved away we drifted apart but always had sporadic contact. When I was in nursing school Gene text me saying how proud he was of me going to school and working as a healthcare working during the COVID pandemic.

I was devastated to learn of his passing and I can´t believe a world exists without him in it.

RIP Gene. You were a wonderful soul.

Honored to have had the pleasure of serving with Gene during his time here in Alameda. I´m even more honored to have been considered his friend. I used to give Gene a ride home everyday after work and he would beg to pay me for the rides but I sincerely enjoyed his company and that was worth way more than he could´ve ever paid. We got to dive deep into each other´s lives on those short car rides and I´ll be forever grateful for getting to know the man he was beneath the surface. The obituary is accurate in stating how much he cherished his family as they were the topic of most of our conversations.
The loss of Gene cuts deep. He was friend to everyone and has certainly left his mark on this world.
My sincerest condolences to Gene´s family. Know that he loved and appreciated all of you.

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
