Leonard M. “Lenny” Fontaine, 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, following complications from a hip injury. Born at home in the Aldenville section of Chicopee on November 1, 1938, he was the last of eleven children of the late Alcide and Bertha (Tanguay) Fontaine. A graduate of St. Jerome High School in Holyoke, he was also a faithful parishioner of Ste. Rose de Lima Church. Lenny was a US Army veteran, serving his country in the Combat Engineers Division. A trusted letter carrier for forty-two years, Lenny delivered mail on the same route for thirty of those years to the nicest people on and off Granby Road in Chicopee. He enjoyed watching their children grow up and have families of their own. He was also quick with a treat for their dogs. Lenny was a proud union member of Br. 46-NALC of Springfield and a member and volunteer driver for the Chicopee Senior Center. He loved hunting and fishing, especially ice fishing. Lenny was predeceased in 2013 by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Mary Ann Shea of Holyoke; his brothers, Dr. Rene Fontaine, Paul “Bones”, Gerald “Jim”, and Donald “Booker” Fontaine, and his dear sisters, Lorraine Gosselin, Doris Carney, Claire Dugre, and Rita Rougeau. Lenny is survived by his dear, sweet daughter, Susan and her husband Brian Basili of Yarmouthport, MA, and his devoted son, Daniel and his wife Debbie of Hudson, NH, both of whom were a great source of pride to him; his awesome grandchildren, Danielle and Christopher Basili and Kristina and Jessica Fontaine; and his dear sister, Pauline Bourque of Chicopee. Lenny also leaves his identical twin brother and best friend, Edward “Ed” Fontaine of S. Windsor CT; sister-in-law, Donna Fontaine; and many prized nephews and nieces. His last wishes were that the good Lord watch over his beloved family and that God would consider him to be a “keeper.” Funeral services for Lenny will be held Saturday at 8:30AM from Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in Ste. Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan St., Chicopee. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Ste. Rose de Lima Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-6PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chicopee Senior Center, River Mills, 5 West Main St., Chicopee, MA 01020. kozikowskifuneralhome.com
