Michael Anthony Smith, Sr., 75, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Frank H. Smith, and the late John J. and Anna Marie (Stirlacci) Timothy.
One of eight children, Michael grew up in Springfield's North End. After graduating Technical High School in 1968, Michael served as a Specialist Fourth Class in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Michael wed Gail Anable in 1973, before settling in the city's South End. He then bravely and dutifully served the City of Springfield as a firefighter for 30 years, retiring in 2005.
Along with his parents, Mike was predeceased by his beloved wife Gail, sisters Bonnie and Cathy, and brother Frank "Snuffy."
He is survived by his son Michael Jr. of Springfield, daughter Keri Ann and her children Ronin & Winter of West Brookfield, sisters Sandy Duval of Southwick, JoEllen Sarage of Springfield, and Robin Timothy of Pinehurst, NC, brother John Timothy of Fresno, CA, many nieces, nephews & extended family, and of course his cherished furry friend Keno, all of whom will dearly miss his wonderful sense of humor and steady presence.
Mike's family is most grateful to the bed 7 ICU staff at Mercy Medical Center for their tireless care and thoughtful consideration.
Michael's funeral service, with military honors, will be Friday, November 14, 9 a.m. at the MA Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.

Sandy, JoEllen, Robin, and the rest of Michael's family - I was so sorry to hear of his passing. I will remember him with a smile. Loved his dry sense of humor! I remember he and Snuffy pulling off a great prank at the funeral of one of our great aunts. They were pall bearers, as was Kathy's husband Max. Max had never been one before. Michael and Snuffy convinced him that he might be overdressed in a suit because as pall bearers they had to dig the hole at the cemetery. This charade kept up from the funeral home to the church and until they reached the cemetery. Poor Max - such a good sport, with Michael and Snuffy never breaking character. I hope your memories help ease his loss.
