Alan Kates Obituary

Alan K. Kates, 68 of Pahrump, NV died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 while in the hospital. Born June 9, 1949 in Allentown, he was the son of the late Earl and Viola (Harwick) Kates. He and his wife Mellie were married 22 yrs last November. Alan was a Marine and proudly served his nation in Viet Nam. After discharge, he worked as a union carpenter in the Union Local 600. During this time, he expanded his combat and martial arts training, working to develop a new and exciting martial art known internationally as Sa-Gi-Do. Soke Grandmaster Kates trained thousands of martial artists across the globe. While dissatisfied with the politics he encountered, he began an organization known as the Worldwide Alliance of Martial Artists to protect the martial arts from abuse. His legacy will be protected and nurtured forever by his family, and through his faithful students. In addition to his wife Mellie, he is survived by sons, Brian K. Kates, husband of Bobbie Jo in Emerald, Micah A. Kates of Lansford, Claudine Rivera, wife of Ben in OR, and George Bieber, husband of Tiffany in Tamaqua. Alan is also survived by brothers Lawrence and Clarence of FL, and sisters Viola Bachert, Patricia Van Luvanee, and Lilian Guth all of PA. He enjoyed 5 grandchildren. Alan is predeceased by brothers William, Richard, Raymond, and Earl, Jr. A memorial service will be held on April 7 at 12:00 pm at the Bethany Wesleyan Church, 675 Blue Mtn Dr. Cherryville, PA 18035.

After being out of the Schuylkill County area, I only recently learned of Master Kate’s’ passing. Myself and my father went to his Tae Kwon Do school in Tamaqua for many years, and visited his home in Allentown where his family was gracious enough to have us. Master Kates always showed us how to exercise our body but also our mind. I always enjoyed hanging out with Micah after our class, and we would run around Tamaqua having fun. RIP Master Kates. You were a big part of my childhood.

Alan Kates, my father was an amazing man in many ways to many people. He was loving, caring, strict, motivated, creative, and strong. He was always there for my brother Brian and I, in the ways he knew would benefit us in becoming who we are today. I remember one of our bonding times was when he and I used to stop and rent movies at small gas station on the way home from the karate school. We would always have to grab a pack of those cream filled Donuts and a container of milk. It's the smallest things that may seem insignificant half the time, but looking back they were some of the most important. You will be Missed by all of us. I love you to dad.
