Bernard Berman Obituary

Bernard Berman
Bernard Berman, 86, of Allentown, died Wednesday, November 1 in his home. Bernie was married to Audrey Roman Berman for 48 years when she passed away in 1998. Born in Pennsburg, he was the son of Joseph and Dora Berman and the youngest of seven Berman siblings. Bernies life was one of constant activity and varied experiences. He served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II as a supply master, a good job for a man who could buy and sell anything. After his military service, he returned to the family business, Berman Leasing and Sales and never lost his love of trucks and automobiles. He may be best known for his love of cars and his pleasure in sharing that interest. After purchasing Allentown Brake & Wheel in 1970, Bernie devoted much of his time and attention to the expansion of the Allentown Art Museum. Along with his wife, Audrey, he has made many contributions to improve the excellence of the museum. His latest passion was the Arts Park, spanning the area around Symphony Hall, the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum in downtown Allentown. It is a testament to his perseverance that after seven years the Arts Park will be dedicated early in the new year. Even during his recent illness, he would visit the Arts Park weekly to check on the progress. He was a member of Congregation Keneseth Israel, Allentown. Survivors: Bernie is survived by his daughter, Ann, wife of Sam Spektor, of Cambridge, Mass., Eileen, wife of Roberto Fischmann, of Allentown; granddaughters, Diana, Claudia and Veronica of Allentown, who cherished every moment they spent with him. Services: 10:30 a.m. today in Congregation Keneseth Israel, 2227 Chew St., Allentown. Arrangements by J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Allentown Art Museum Endowment Fund, Attention David Brigham, Executive Director, 31 N. Fifth St., Allentown, PA 18101.

To the Friends and Family of Bernie Berman: Our Firm has often helped out Bernie with Engineering Services. One day he came to me and asked some questions on a property boundary issue. We discussed it and came up with the position of the boundary line and its dimensions. The next day he called Barry Isett and asked the same question. Barry asked Bernie as to whether he and I had figured it out the day before. Bernie said I had but told Barry he didn't like my answer and wanted a different one. I have fond memories of working with him. He was always so energetic.

Growing up in the West End of Allentown, I know the Berman family well. One of my fondest childhood memories was when Bernie brought out his antique fire engine, picked up all the kids in the neighborhood, capped us with old fire helmets, and took us for a joy ride. Then he would ask, "and where do you live?" and take all each child back home. This happened several times during the late sixties, and was typical of his generosity.
