Elizabeth C. Bette Niece, 96, of Hackettstown, N.J., formerly of Pohatcong Township, N.J., passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2006 in Heath Village, Hackettstown. Born July 27, 1909 in Phillipsburg, N.J., she lived most of her life in Phillipsburg and Pohatcong Township, moving to Heath Village in 1998. Elizabeth was a school teacher. She began her teaching career in a one room school house on Mammy Morgans Hill, Williams Township. Later, she taught in the Phillipsburg School System at the Barber Sitgreaves and Brensinger schools. She taught for 34 years retiring in 1964. She was a daughter of the late William Howard Pickel and Sarah Louise (Williamson) Pickel Melick. She was a member of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club of the Easton Y.W.C.A., The Warren County Retired Teachers Association and the New Jersey State Teachers Association. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School, class of 1927, Kutztown State Teachers College in 1930 and received her bachelors degree in education from Rutgers University in 1934. Her husband, Joseph E. Niece, passed away in 1978. Survivors: Brother, William H. Pickel of Lopatcong Township, N.J.; nieces, Mary Louise (Collins) Carhart of South Freeport, Maine, Barbara Ann (Pickel) Bakley of Lopatcong Township; nephew, William H. Pickel Jr. of Caldwell, Idaho. A sister, Ruth (Pickel) Collins, passed away in 1975 and her companion, Wilbur Saylor, passed away in 1998. Services: private, at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment of her cremains will be in Fairmont Cemetery, Phillipsburg. Arrangements, Rupell Funeral Home, Phillipsburg.
