Eugene Sharkey Obituary

The Rev. Eugene F. Sharkey, Jr., 73, of Bethlehem, passed away November 9, 2023, in his home. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of the late Eugene F. Sr. and Anna (Malloy) Sharkey. A graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia, Pastor Sharkey began his ministry at Grace Lutheran Church, Gouldsboro, PA, then served more than 35 years at the former Messiah Lutheran Church, now Blessed Trinity Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, where he was named Pastor Emeritus. He held four Master's degrees from University of Delaware, University of Pennsylvania, Albright College and the Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary. In addition to his long time parish ministry, Pastor Sharkey devoted much of his time to the Northampton County Prison educational program call "Get A Life" in which he helped inmates learn to read, write, fill out applications, and other life skills needed for their education. Always a humble servant of his Lord, Pastor Sharkey was selfless with his parishioners and family. His life was truly about putting others first.

Surviving are four sons, Glenn Bell (Patricia) of East Greenville, Jason Powell-Sharkey of Bethlehem, Andy Powell, with whom he resided and Eric Kromer of Hadley, Massachusetts; sister, Anne Stocker of Sunbury; brothers, Keith and Ron Gilkey; grandchildren Jason, Jr., Jessica, Julie and Jacy; nieces and nephews; and his "Best Friend" Ginger. He was predeceased by a brother Richard Sharkey.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 2, in Blessed Trinity Lutheran Church, 2020 Worthington Avenue, Bethlehem, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to the Northampton County Prison Ministry, Hogar Crea or the Center for Animal Health and Welfare. Pearson Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements www.pearsonfh.com.

I am so sorry for your loss. Pastor Sharkey was an amazing person. He was always there for everyone. He Baptized my son, was there to do a eulogy for my Mother when she passed. Stopped in or called to check on us. Always had the most beautiful smile and he smiled with his eyes. He will be missed by all. I believe he is looking down as your guardian angel and will help you though this. God Bless

I have so many fond memories of this truly kind, generous and humble man who played a pivotal role in providing my children with a religious foundation. I enjoyer spending time with this remarkable man during many fellowship activities involving the children of Messiah Lutheran church. He will be sadly missed.
