G. Dana Schrader
G. Dana Schrader, 72, of Havertown, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, August 23, while golfing with a friend in Ocean City, N.J. Mr. Schrader was born in Philadelphia to parents Granger D. Schrader and Margaret (Spurr) Schrader and grew up on Hirst Terrace in Oakmont with his three younger brothers, Bob, Fred and Steve. He graduated from Haverford High School in 1950, where he participated in soccer and tennis, and played saxophone in the marching band and a local dance band, The Skyliners. Mr. Schrader attended Wesleyan and Penn State universities, where he studied geology and petroleum engineering, respectively. He served five years active duty and 15 years reserve duty as a pilot in the Navy, retiring in 1975 with a rank of commander. In 1962, he met Sandy Shriver of Easton, while they were working for UGI in Bethlehem. They were married in 1965 and soon after settled in Havertown, where they raised their three daughters, Jill, Jan and Julie. Mr. Schrader made a career in mechanical engineering, working for United Engineers/Raytheon in the 1970s and 80s and retired from the Burns Group this past year. Among his many hobbies and interests, he continued to play the saxophone, was an avid gardener, an active member of Temple Lutheran Church, and a full-time grandfather to his two grandchildren, Stefan and Alexandra Trollo. He also loved to travel and was fortunate to have been able to take two wonderful trips this year with his family. In April, he traveled to Brazil for his nephews wedding and to visit with close family friends in Rio de Janeiro. In June, he toured Poland and Prague while visiting hi youngest daughter in Warsaw. Survivors: Mr. Schrader is survived by his wife Sandy; daughters Jill, Jan and Julie; son-in-law Louis Trollo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Lillibet Schrader, Fred and Joy Schrader, Steve and Cinda Schrader; in-laws Jim, Sandy and Margaret Shriver; as well as 10 loving nieces and nephews. Services: memorial, will be held 11 a.m. August 30 in Temple Lutheran Church, Havertown. Arrangements by Stretch Funeral Service, Havertown. Contributions: May be sent to Temple Lutheran Church, 501 Brookline Boulevard, Havertown, 19083. Contributions will be used to fund the handicap elevator, a project that was very important to Mr. Schrader and to which he gave so much of his time and energy in recent months.
