Howard Listwa Obituary

Dr. Howard Listwa, age 75, passed away in his home on August 13, 2022, following a long illness. He was the son of Helen (Karel) and William Listwa, and twin brother of Steven, all deceased.

He was the loving husband of Sharon (Sherree) Spilker Listwa for over 53 years.

Howard was the proud father of three sons and their spouses, David (Lisa), Daniel (Pamela) and Todd (Katy) and adored his grandchildren, Abby, Britta, Danica, and Jonas. He was known for his dad jokes and entertained his family during "Happy Hour with Howard".

He enjoyed spending time with his family in Pennsylvania and especially in his home near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where he spent many days on the golf course and beach.

Howard was a proud graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia, class # 222. He continued to wear his high school ring and Central tee shirts throughout his life. His education continued at Temple University (1968), and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (1972). He completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and served additional years in the Army at Ft. Ord in Monterey, California, which he jokingly called his "hardship tour." Howard was an accomplished recreational airplane pilot, marksman, and military physician. He retired from the Army in 1978 to enter private practice in Allentown, Pennsylvania. One of Howard's greatest pleasures was treating his many patients and being part of their health for over 40 years. Dr. Listwa was a member of both Temple Beth El, Allentown, PA and Congregation Beth Yam, Hilton Head, S.C.

Howard requested that there be no formal service in his memory. His ashes will be spread at a later date in a memorial garden in Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island, a place that he loved. If you wish to honor his memory, Howard would have appreciated contributions in his memory to Cardiac Amyloidosis Research at arci.org/donate or by mail to: The Amyloidosis Research Consortium, 320 Nevada Street, Suite 210 Newton, MA 02460.

Aunt Sherree, Dave, Todd, Dan, and the entire Listwa family,

We are so sorry for your loss. Uncle Howard had the perfect mix of wisdom and humor. We have so many wonderful memories of him - Camp Bubbie, family dinners, all of the celebrations, his medical advice numerous times, even driving us to the airport for our honeymoon. We also have him to thank for introducing the Spilker clan to Hilton Head so many years ago. He will be greatly missed.

Hi Sherrree, I so sorry to hear about Howard . I didn´t know he had been ill. I want to tell you that the hospitality that you shared at your house with the cochlear chapter was top notch . We had so much fun sharing stories about our implants . The food was delicious . I´ll never forget Howard was right up there with the knowledge of the cochlear implants. He was a very good advocate. He will be missed ! Hugs and love to all the family ....

Dr. Listwa delivered my son almost 30 years ago...his hands were the first to touch his little new life and I will cherish that memory. I'm sure he delivered thousands of babies whose names may have been forgotten over the years, but whose mamas will never forget him...wishing your family peace, sympathy, and love. I feel very blessed to have known him.

Dr Listwa was a great person and doctor to work with for many years. He never had the privilege of delivering my children because he always left for vacation when they decided to make their entrance into the world. Rest easy and don´t forget to tell your corny jokes.

Howard Listwa was a wonderful human being in addition to being a wonderful OB. He delivered my second child and I remember well many conversations and laughs over the years since. I was so honored when he and Sherree became two of my most fervent supporters - showing up at town halls, campaign events, veterans events. He will be dearly missed and was deeply loved by all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing.
