I had the pleasure of living with Jay for 7 years. Our bond was more than just a friendship it was more like family. Even when Jay moved home we still remained really good friends. We were always there for each other when trouble seemed to land in each others lap.Jason's memories will always live on as long as I am here. I will share his stories about our vacations, and all the good times we had. This alone will take a lifetime to tell. I love him like my own brother! Our cirlce of friends feel the same way. We had plenty of days/nights that we didn't want to end. Boy-they were such good times. He will be missed but not forgotten. Your best friend -Luis

My deepest sympathy to all that knew Jason. I got to know him thru playing with and against Dutch Mafia. He was truly a great person and I am glad I got to know him. We were shocked to hear of Jason's passing. Although we did not know him as well as the other guys, he was always a friendly smile at the hockey rink. It was always fun to play against him on Dutch Mafia or with him at other times when we needed an extra guy on our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all his friends during this grieving time. Just know he is in a better place and is now one of God's angels watching over us all. You will be missed Merkel.

Dear Brothers and love ones,

I find it in my heart to no that the Great Architech has called upon my brother. I send this poem to the family and all the friends to whom Jason B. Merkel ever known. As Brother Jason B. Merkel left us we all no he is indeed a true man of this world. He lived a very good life an shown to be one of the best in all our lives. So to all that are brother's to Jason B. Merkel please let those whom ask what this message in this poem means....

"Our Poor Brethren"

"Our poor and penniless brethren, dispersed over land and sea."

They met in the festive hall,
Lamps in their brightness shone,
And merry music and mirth,
Aided the feast of St. John.
Men pledged the health of their Queen
And of all the Royal band,
The flags of a thousand years,
The swords of their motherland.

Then mid the revelry came
The sound of a mournful strain,
Like a minor chord in music,
A sweet but sad refrain;
It rose on the heated air,
Like a mourner's earnest plea,
"Our poor and penniless brethren
Dispersed over land and sea."

Poor and penniless brethren
Scattered over the world,
Want and misfortune and woe
Round them fierce darts have hurled;
Wandering alone upon mountains,
Sick and fainting and cold,
Lying heart-broken in prisons,
Chained in an enemy's hold.

Dying in fields of combat,
With none to answer back
The masonic sign of distress,
Left on the battle's track.
Shipwrecked in foaming waters,
Clinging to broken spars,
Dying, this night of St. John,
Mid the ocean and the stars.

Others with hunger faint--we
Taste these rich and varied meats--
Oppression gives them no home
But dark and desolate streets.
Oh, God of mercy, hear us,
As we ask a boon for Thee,
For poor and penniless brethren
Dispersed over land and sea.

Poor and penniless brethren,
Ah, in the Master's sight,
We all lay claim to the title
On this, our festival night.
Lone pilgrims journeying on
Towards light that points above,
Treading the chequered earthworks
Till we reach the land of love.

Work up to the landmark, brothers,
We shall not always stay,
The falling shadows warn us
To work in the light of day.
How often our footsteps turn
Where a brother's form is hid,
Oft we cast evergreen sprigs
On a brother's coffin lid.

Thou, who dost give to each
Some appointed post to hold,
Teach us to cherish the weak,
To give Thy silver and gold;
To guard as a soldier guards
Honor and Love's pure shrine,
To give our lives for others,
As Thou did'st for us give Thine.

To Masons all over the world
Give wisdom to work aright,
That they may gather in peace
Their working tools at night.
May love's star glitter o'er each,
Amid darkness, storm or mist,
As on this night of St. John,
Our Blest Evangelist.

I'm still in disbelif that Jason is gone.

Jason was one of the nicest guys out there. Time & time again he went out of his way to help out not just me , but anyone who needed it, weather they were a friend or stranger. & he kept us laughing the entire time.

Jason was an old soul and I'll never forget him, his voice, his jokes, his sincerity, & everything he ever did for me.

His family has suffered more tradgedy than anyone should know and my thoughts & prayers are with them.

To the parents of Jason, I Did not know Jason im sure we crossed paths beacuse my Son Daniel did know him ,through Hockey .My Deepest sympathy In the loss Of your child. Here's a little poem hopefully the words could comfort you in this time sorrow..Sincerly Alma Safely Home

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and suffering is over
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And he came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's will.

There is still work waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth-
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is completed,
He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Jason was my neighbor for about 9 or 10 years, and if theirs one memory I'll always have, its spending the summer nights as kids pretending we were power rangers, or playing kick-ball in my front yard with the other neighbors, and every time I was up to kick, he'd always yell "move up!" I'll never forget the time either, on my backyard swing set, Jason told me if I got a garbage bag and jumped off the top deck, I'd be able to parachute. I tried, but needless to say, I just landed hard on my feet. Even looking back, as a kid, Jason was full of life and always had a smile on his face. Though it's been about six years since I've spoken to Jason last, I'm at a loss for words and can't express enough how tragic this is. Brian and Carol, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

We are sorry for your loss of your son. Perhaps these two poems will help ease your pain a little:
I'll Lend You My Child

I'll lend you for a little time a child of mine, He said.
For you to love - while he lives
And mourn for when he's dead.

It may be six or seven years
Or twenty-two or three
But will you, till i call him back,
Take care of him for me ?

He'll bring his smiles to gladden you,
And should this stay be brief
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.

I've looked this world over
In search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd
Life's lanes, I have selected you.

Now will you give him all your love,
Nor count the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call to
Take him back again?

I fancied that I heard then say,
Dear Lord, Thy will be done,
For all the joy Thy child shall bring,

The risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known
Forever grateful stay.

But should the Angels call for him
Much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that came
And try to understand.
AND
The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly,in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Brian, Carol, and Caroline: As you know, I am lacking words to express the depth of my surprise and sadness. He will be missed.

I want to extend my deepest condolences to Jason's parents, who have had to endure more than any parent should in their lifetime. I'm so sorry for your loss and please know that you are in my prayers. I met Jason almost 4 years ago when I started dating my husband, Brett. Even though I was the new girl, Jason immediately made me feel like I had always been a part of the group. I will always remember the surprise birthday party Caroline and I threw for Jason last year. He stopped by our house after work to "hang out" and while he was up in the guest bathroom showering, we pulled out the birthday cake, lit the candles, and filled the kitchen with balloons. I'll never forget how surprised he was and how happy he looked when he came downstairs to find out that everyone was there for him.
He was sweet, generous, accepting, hilarious, and a person who would do anything for his friends. Jason- I'll miss your smile, your big bear hugs, and your infectious laugh. Thank you for being my friend. I'll miss you always.

One of the first memories that came
to mind of Jason was a photo from
our Nana Merkel showing a pint -sized "Superfly Jimmy Snuka"
jumping mid-air on to her lap. Sorry
I can't find the picture, but it was
a good one! Jason was always a
smiling and good kid (in the typical
Merkel fashion!) for the few times I had the opportunity of being around him.
For Brian, Carol & Uncle Richard
I wish I could find the right words to
console you. Hopefully, this one fond
memory helps. Even though we could
not be there in body, we're here in
spirit for you. Speaking for all of us
here in The Smoky Mountains and in
Florida, the rest of the family sends
our most sincere thoughts and con-
dolensces. Love you all.

I have known Jason for sometime now. We have been through a lot together and I was there many of times for him. I known one thing for sure..when Jason was around in most cases he would always be smiling and make you laugh. Now it's his turn to smile and have internal peace. May his presence in our hearts and minds give us strength and allow us to share his love with all of his family and friends at this time. He will be missed by all of us here in Reading! I was good friends with Jason in both high school and college and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was a great guy with an even greater sense of humor; I can't think of my senior year at Northern Lehigh without recalling fond memories of him. He approached every situation with a positive attitude and a big smile and he was always willing to help out his friends. I will forever remember Jason as a person who truly embraced life and strived to make the best of it.
