Kathryn Grayson
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kathryn Grayson, whose beauty and lilting soprano brightened MGM musicals of the 1940s and 1950s including "Anchors Aweigh," "Show Boat," "The Desert Song" and "Kiss Me Kate," has died. She was 88.

Grayson died Wednesday of natural causes at her Los Angeles home, said the actress' longtime companion and secretary, Sally Sherman.

Grayson's youthful ambition was to sing opera, but she wasn't able to accomplish that dream until after her movie career ended. While still a teenager, she was placed under contract at MGM at a time when the studio was assembling a stable of musical talent that would dominate the era of great musicals.

"I thought they were wasting their time and money," Grayson recalled of her first days at the studio. "I even told (studio boss) Louis B. Mayer that. He said he knew a lot more than a 16-year-old girl who is and who isn't good material for pictures.

"He offered a deal: I would make a screen test, and if the studio liked the test, I would shut up forever. If not, I would go.

"It was the longest test in motion picture history. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars; it was almost a two-reeler .... The studio liked it. I told Mr. Mayer I didn't like it. He went home with a heart attack."

Concerned, Grayson agreed to stay, and she turned down an offer to sing "Lucia" at the Metropolitan Opera. She later learned that Mayer had two ploys to persuade recalcitrant actors: to cry or to claim a heart attack.

Like Lana Turner, Esther Williams, Donna Reed and other MGM newcomers, Grayson was given a tryout as Mickey Rooney's sweetheart in the studio's popular Hardy Family series. She played the title role in "Andy Hardy's Private Secretary" and sang Strauss's "Voices of Spring." Mayer was convinced that he had a future star.

She was cast in three minor films, including a musical with Abbot and Costello, then played Gene Kelly's girlfriend in a wartime revue that included major MGM stars, "Thousands Cheer."

"Anchors Aweigh," a 1945 hit with Kelly and Frank Sinatra, confirmed her star status. Her bell-like soprano made her the ideal co-star with Hollywood's full-voiced male singers in operettas and other musicals. She made three films with Howard Keel, two with Mario Lanza, one with Gordon MacRae.

Normally she was the most congenial of actresses during filming, but she did have one public flare-up with the temperamental Lanza. He lit the fire when he told an interviewer: "I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Kathryn because she was in my first two pictures."

She took offense because she believed as an established MGM star, they were her pictures. She told an interviewer she objected to Lanza's behavior on the set, especially his vulgar language.

She was born Zelma Kathryn Hedrick on Feb. 9, 1922, in Winston-Salem, N.C., her father a building contractor and realtor. Because of his business, the family moved frequently, finally settling in St. Louis, Mo. Her parents recognized her gifted voice and arranged an audition before opera star Frances Marshall. She encouraged the girl to continue her music lessons.

The family moved to Los Angeles so Kathryn could have more professional training. She came to the attention of Mayer, who had been searching for a lovely young soprano to rival Universal's sensational Deanna Durbin (Durbin had been under contract to MGM, but she was dropped in favor of Judy Garland).

When the newly named Kathryn Grayson sang two arias in "Andy Hardy's Private Secretary," Mayer realized he had a new star. Among her musicals: "Two Sisters from Boston," "Ziegfeld Follies," "Till the Clouds Roll By," "That Midnight Kiss," "The Toast of New Orleans," "Show Boat," "Lovely to Look At," "Kiss Me Kate," "The Desert Song" and "So This Is Love" (as Grace Moore).

Her last film, "The Vagabond King" in 1956, soured her on movies. She was scheduled to be reunited with Lanza, but he pulled one of his characteristic no-shows. An unknown Oreste Kirkpop (billed only as Oreste), was a last-minute substitution. "He couldn't speak English, so the director, Mike Curtiz, told me to speak his lines. 'But I'm not Francois Villon,' I said. 'It doesn't matter,' said Mike." Oreste's lines were dubbed.

"It never should have been made," she told an interviewer." (Composer) Rudolf Friml was so upset about it that he told Paramount he was going out of town for the weekend. He went to Hong Kong."

Her film career over, Grayson remained active. She realized her long-held ambition to sing in opera, and she also starred in productions of "The Merry Widow," "Rosalinda," "Naughty Marietta," and "Camelot." She and Howard Keel toured extensively in "Man of La Mancha" and appeared together in Las Vegas. She sang concerts in Australia and appeared in a one-woman show of film clips and reminiscences.

She married and divorced MGM contract players John Shelton (1940-1946) and Johnny Johnston (1947-1951). The marriage to Johnston produced her only child, Patricia Kathryn. Grayson never remarried.

In a 1988 interview Grayson remarked that she had given up writing her memoirs because it wouldn't be the "kiss and tell" kind the publishers wanted.

"I'm a Pollyanna," she confessed. "I had to stop writing because I love everybody and I was saying everyone was beautiful. I just happen to think people are pretty wonderful."

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always. My father would always tell me that Kathryn Grayson was a 5th cousin of ours on my dads side, he also said I had the heart shaped face and that favorite button nose and that we kind of looked alike I never got to meet her and would of loved to. God Bless her and she now sings to the Lord.Being 69 now I look forward to seeing her one day in heaven. But for now I have joy in watching her films.

The summer of 1955 I saw Ms. Grayson walking up the driveway to the home of her vocal coach on Shelby Drive in L.A. She was very gracious and allowed me, a 16 year old girl from Florida, to take her photo. Such a dear person who through her kindness gave me a lifelong sweet memory. I am 82 now.

I recieved the 78 RPM album of Show Boat from my aunt when I was 14 yrs. old, that was in 1954, I have always treasured it and still have it, today. I own all of her musicals on DVD, except The Desert Song, which I've not been able to find, but do have it on VHS, she was always my favorite actress, and I too, have an autographed picture of her.

Such beauty and talent. I remember a signed photo on our mantle for many years but it's only since my mothers death that I have discovered a thankyou letter and a later Christmas card from Katherine to my mother that I wish I had the chance to ask all those questions I will never get answers to now.

Kathryn Grayson, along with Mario Lanza, brought opera to the average American. As a consequence, many developed an interest in that wonderful art-form. They were beautiful people singing beautiful music--very well.

I saw Kathryn in "Kiss Me Kate" in 1954. I was only 8 years old, but her beauty and gorgeous singing made a lifelong impact on me. To this day, I love this movie, own the DVD, and still watch. I was so saddened to hear of her passing and feel that we have lost a true treasure. I am a faithful admirer and will be for the rest of my life. For Kathryn...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

When I was eight years old, my parents took me to see The Singing Bandit playing at NYC's Capitol Theatre. We just loved Kathryn Grayson's singing and performance but the best part was that she was starring in a live stage show with her then husband Johnny Johnston. I thought she had the voice and beauty of an angel and we all remained loyal fans, never missing one of her moviesl. Our deepest condolences to her daughter and family. Rest in peace, Kathryn

In 1956 when I was only 14 years old our family took a trip to Los Angeles to visit Dad's family. My Aunt worked at Paramount and arranged a tour for us - on that tour we all met Kathryn Grayson who was in full costume filming the Vagabond King. We had our picture taken with her in her beautiful costume and I remember how kind and soft spoken she was to us. At 14, I was totally taken by her beauty and from that day forward watched all of her movies. That photo is among my most treasured keepsakes. I was heartbroken at the news of her passing. She is in my heart forever.

I havn't seen Kathryn since she was to the opening of the Mario Lanza museum.

I first met Kathryn in Dec. of 1985 while finishing the sets for a holiday concert in Ridgefield Park, N.J. I looked in front of me to a pair of black shoes peeking out from under a long white fur coat. A voice asked me where she would find our director Carl.
I could barely speak. I took her to him & finished my work & left.
The following day before rehearsal I was Introduced by a dear friend who told her of my long time crush on her. She promptly rose and planted a kiss om me the memory of which will be with me always. As I am writing this, I am listening to the albums she gave me so long ago and remembering the nights we ate late suppers together and our evening at the Papermill Play house. It was also such a thrill to have performed with her and got to know her. We even refered to her as aunt kate. We will all mourne the passing of such a dear friend and the world will never see the likes of our fallen star.
May God give comfort to her Family and friends (& Sally)
your friend and longtime fan from N.j.

Growing up in a small town in Iowa, I impatiently waited for Sunday afternoons when the "MGM musicals" played at the local theatre. They Were Just Two Of A Kind
By D.K. Milgrim-Heath
They were just two just of a kind-
Howard Keel & Kathryn Grayson we find.
From earth to heaven a life is done-
Ms. Grayson's away from every one.
Her beautiful strong angelic voice-
Hearing its beauty was one's choice.
Such beauty being heard was a thrill-
Recorded forever never to be still.
By her wonderful life she did impart-
Joyous love by singing from her heart.
Ms. Grayson we'll never ever forget-
Your grace and beauty will never set.

Kathryn used her God-given voice to bring joy to this world. She was classy, a lady, first and foremost and had the most wonderful sense of humor. In October, 1983 when she was touring New England in "Orpheus", I had the pleasure of taking her and Sally to dinner at Anthony's Pier Four. Our five hour dinner was unforgettable thanks to Kathryn's humor, warmth and generosity of spirit. She will never be forgotten and I hope her family and loved ones can take some measure of comfort in the legacy she left behind.

Ms. Grayson was the consumate entertainer, but more importantly she always had time for family. When Kristen Towers (her grand-daughter) was one of my students at Hollywood High Performing Arts High School she came to every performance and cheered loudly for everyone in the show, especially Kristen. She posed for pictures with anyone who asked it of her. She gave her professional critique which was greatly appreciated. She was a complete human being. I will always cherish my memories of her. She will be missed, but remembered with warmth and affection by all of us whose lives she touched.

As you probably have learned, Actress-Singer Kathryn Grayson passed away yesterday 88. I was a friend of her daughter Patty in elementary school. Patty also had a sophisticated, trained voice years beyond her age. About a half century ago Mrs. Grayson drove Patty and me down San Vicente Blvd. in her brand new shiny red Caddy convertible. We sat in the middle of the backseat .Our celebrity mom driver wore a pink scarf and big Jackie-O sunglasses. She asked me,"Bobby, who's your favorite singer?" I responded,"I just love Jane Powell!"
"You do,do you!?" she countered and with that she started to belt out some operatic piece from Carmen. I mean she was singing as if she were on stage! But the singing made her a more aggressive driver, cutting people off and waving her arms alternately as she hit the high notes. I applauded upon our reaching the Grayson mansion driveway half for her command performance and half that we had made it home safely. I told my mom about Kathryn Grayson's Wild Ride and she informed me that I made a faux pas because Jane Powell and Kathryn had often fought for the same roles and were rivals. Kathryn was a beautiful talented woman and a very attentive mother. She also was a heck of a driver.

I cherished these photos, but unfortunately they were lost in a move. My favorite was of Miss Grayson. Whenever I see "Show Boat" being shown on the old movies, I sit myself down and get lost in Miss Grayson's beautiful voice. She was truly a beautiful, very gifted lady.

I remember the name Kathryn Grayson as a youngster because everyone thought she looked like my mother, who was dark and lovely looking. I probably did see some of her pictures but don't remember but will try to find some now. May she rest in peace. She was talented and beautiful and , like many other stars of her time, they were in some ways, a slave to the studios. It is good that changes have been made (hopefully!). She wore a raspberry colored dress which set off her features so beautifully. She was truly one in a million to me. I, too, was a singer, and her sound was the sound to which I aspired. I'm so sorry she's gone. What joy she gave.
