Matthew Hinkle Obituary
Matthew W. Hinkle, 57, of Northampton, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Donna R. (Berg). Together, they celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on September 1. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late George E. and Lorraine V. (Marsh) Hinkle. Matthew was employed by Bethlehem Area School District as a Spanish teacher for E. Hills Middle School for the past three years. Previously, he taught for the Allentown School District S. Mountain Middle School for a year. Before that, he was a product marketing manager for Agere Systems Incorporated, Allentown, for 21 years. Prior to that, he worked for the former Fuller Company, Schoenersville, for three years as a technical translator. Before that, he was a Spanish teacher for Whitehall High School for five years. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a B.S. degree in Spanish education. He most recently achieved a masters degree in technology from Wilkes College in December. He was a member and regularly assisted with sound and praise and worship at City Limits Assembly of God Church, Allentown, a member of the Barber Shop Quartet the Audible Difference, a member and former assistant director of the Allentown Chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. organization, and a member of the Summer Harmony Group, Allentown. He was a former director for the Sweet Adelines Harmony Group, Allentown. He enjoyed woodworking and was considered Mr. Fix It when it came to all-around repair. Survivors: Wife; daughter, Kathryn R., wife of Blake R. Hoppes, and son, Stephen A. Hinkle, all of Northampton; sister, Darlene V., wife of Carl K. Johnson of Kunkletown; brother, Timothy E. and wife Susan Hinkle of Northampton; twin grandchildren, Jordan and Cayden Hoppes. Services: The family will received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, January 24, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, January 25, at Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Ave., Northampton, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with Rev. Jimmie Rivera officiating. Interment at Fairview Cemetery, Northampton, will follow the services. Contributions: May be made to the Church Memorial Fund, c/o the funeral home, PA 18067.

Dear Donna & Family,
I, too, knew Matt from Bible study at Agere - he was a blessing to us, always exhorting us to share the Gospel with others. I can imagine his homecoming in Heaven was greeted with "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," but I'm sure you are very much missing him here. It has been inspiring to read how much he did contribute in all walks of life.

Mrs. Hinkle, Kathryn, Stephen & Family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Husband, Father, Grandfather. I didn't know Mr. Hinkle on a personal level. I did go to High School with Stephen, and was his backup Catcher in Connie Mack Baseball back in the day when we were 16. That's how I remember Mr. Hinkle. From coming to the games. I was so sorry to hear about your great loss. Matt was an awesome man who was a great husband, father and friend who loved God. I will never forget how he touched my life spiritually and by just being a friend. We are all going to miss him very much, but we will never forget the memories that we had with Matt.

Mr. Hinkle was my son Jay's spanish teacher for two years at EHMS. We are so very sorry for your loss. He was such a nice man, and it was always a pleasure to talk to him at conference time. I could tell what a kind heart he had, and how important his students were to him. He was so very nice to my son Jay, as well as being a wonderful teacher. We will miss him dearly. Hinkles,
My heart goes out to your family for your loss.
I worked with Matt about 10 years ago at Lucent/Agere and I remember him as the most gentlest and kindest person. He was never at a loss for an inspirational and relevant bible quote.
From the entries in this guest book, it appears that he also made a very positive impact at his "new" career. The entries from the students really hit home with me...
Everyday, I still look at the calendar of Christian sayings that he gave me for my 40th birthday and will now treasure it more.

Matt was most kind and gracious to help keep the Bible Study at Agere running after I left to work at Northrop-Grumman. It was something he just stepped in to do and took upon himself with the wonderful heart of a servant to Jesus. I just got word of his passing through the email of a mutual friend from that time at Agere. I had the chance to reply and noted that it's neat to think about Matt REALLY enjoying a quiet, joyous corner of heaven at this very moment!

Mr. Hinkle was the best spanish teacher ever. He had the best line ever...," Spanish is not English...DUH." I was so upset to find out that he passed away, I almost cried in Spanish. Steve, I am so deeply sorry for your loss, and I'm really sorry I never got a chance to meet your dad. Knowing how we're really just facsimiles of our fathers a generation apart, I bet he was one heck of a guy. Matt was a wonderful fellow barbershopper. He touched so many lives through music and teaching, and we are all much richer for having him cross our paths. How sad to hear of his sudden passing. I'm so deeply sorry to hear about your loss... Mr. Hinkle was my teacher in seventh and eigth grade at East Hills. Not only did he teach us about the language, but he incorporated real-world discussions in his lessons like the importance of not downloading music, various health information, and, overall, the importance of the spanish language in the modern world. When I was in 6th grade I remember I had him as a Spanish teacher at his first year in East Hills. He was a super nice teacher. Even though we got off topic in class quite often he was a good teacher. It's weird now not seeing him outside in the morning anymore. Dear Hinkle Family,
We are saddened to hear of Mr Hinkle's passing. My son was a EHMS student of his this year. How his students perfomed really mattered to him as evidenced by how he helped my son this year. He was quick to contact me, quick to help and follow-up. I remember thinking when I got his emails how much he really cared about his students. Not all teachers are willing to give second chances.......but he believed my son could do better. And he was right!

I was saddened to hear of Matt's passing. I met Matt 10 years ago when I joined Summer Harmony Men's Chorus. He was a joy to be with and I will miss him greatly. He had a wonderful talent directing the chorus and singing those wonderful songs. May the Good Lord bless him and keep him in his loving care forever.

To Matt's family - I never had the opportunity to meet you all. Your husband/dad was my high school Spanish teacher at Whitehall many years ago. He was the best Spanish teacher I ever had. He was always so kind to everyone. And he was funny too. He always kept his classes laughing! All his students loved him and his class was one we all looked forward to. He is truly one good soul. May your loving memories comfort you in your time of sorrow. I am sorry for your loss. God be with you all!
