Renee Strauss Obituary

After a long battle with cancer, Renee passed away peacefully on December 21 at home with her husband Dave by her side. Her last days were spent lying near a bow window in the living room, looking out on the little valley she loved. Renee is survived by David, the love of her life and husband of 56 years. They were in school together since second grade and married in the fall of Renee's junior year in college. They completely restored a 200 year old farmhouse, saving it from near ruin when they were very young and could do the hard work. They

enjoyed many outdoor activities over the years, including camping, snowmobiling, water and snow skiing, car showing, ATVing, and most recently bicycling where they met and enjoyed the company of new friends from many different states.

Also surviving is a son Steven with whom they started and grew a family business from 1982 until the present. Steve was a big help whenever there was work to be done. Always with his parents as he grew up, when they worked, he worked. When they played, he played. Steve, and wife Tina, live on the same property, just up the street. Steve's sons, Christopher and twins, Justin and Jared were a big part of Renee's life.

Sisters Sandra Glass of Allentown and Dawn Zygmontas of Waynesboro, remained lifelong friends and companions enjoying many outings together sometimes for "girls" only and other times accompanied by their husbands Ronald and Rodney (now deceased) respectively. Nieces Kim Watson and Tracey Glass as well as nephews Matt and Chad Loomis also still reside in the area. Another nephew, Kevin Zygmontas, lives in Maryland.

Renee was the youngest daughter of Harry (Hap) and Margaret (Chickie) Walters and grew up in the Fullerton section of Whitehall. Remaining very close to her parents, she and Steve visited them often as he was growing up and helped however they could as her parents aged and eventually passed away.

Renee was most proud of her lifetime roles as a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.

She graduated from Kutztown with a degree in teaching as a traditional student and taught in both the Whitehall and Parkland School Districts before starting her family. Returning to college after 25 years, Renee graduated from Cedar Crest College Summa Cum Laude with a BA in psychology in 1991. She was on the Dean's list, inducted into Psi Chi, the honor society for psychology and received all A's in her class work. Later she returned to Kutztown to earn her Masters degree in Psychology in 1998.

The family started a business when their son was 12. Over the years, Renee had many duties, starting as a truck driver and delivery person in the early days. She would drive to the factory, load the truck with cabinets and then along with Steve, deliver them to customers' homes when he was finished with school for the day. If there were appliances for the job, they would wait till Dave was finished working with customers so all 3 of them could manage to carry large appliances into the homes, many were bi-levels that required lifting them up flights of stairs.

Always wanting to learn and having an interest in creative non-fiction, she returned to college courses again both at Cedar Crest and Lehigh Carbon Community College when she was old enough to be traditional students' grandmother.

A "tomboy" as a child, she continued to enjoy many outdoor activities with her family and the hours spent there, being physically active, over the years, were evident in her rugged appearance. Renee will be remembered for her love of home and family and for her open, honest, straight forward manner. Her feelings always showed clearly on her face and she was known to say about herself, "What you see is what you get". She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

We will miss you. Hopefully we will all be together again someday riding our tandem bikes.

Dave - I cannot express our sadness with the loss of Renee, your life partner. We met you two thru tandem biking but our friendship transpired to something much deeper than simply biking friends. As she took on this battle with cancer, she was an amazing and gracious warrior all the way thru this difficult battle. She amazed us with her tenacity in the battle. It goes without saying that Renee did not battle this disease alone. You were truly her life partner, supporting her all the way thru the battle. We will cherish the fond memories. She will be dearly missed. Love Ross & Donna Glasgow

Renee’ was such a warm and caring person and the founder of our local Red Hat group. She was affectionately called our “Grand Pooh Bah,” which made her laugh as grandeur was not her goal! So many memories with her from hosting scrapbooking and dancing in her home, to apple-picking and hay rides outdoors. She had an aura of calm and sensibility about her that attracted people in and made them want to stay. In a group of 18 Red Hats, she would inquire of each and made sure that all were included in the conversation.
A dear lady has left our midst. With thanks to God for her life and prayers for all her family and friends.

We are sincerely sorry to hear of Renee' passing. I am sure this will leave a deep void in your life that will be impossible to fill, but at least you have countless wonderful memories of your lives together. Knowing you both since high school, we realize the true love you shared for each other and family. Over the years when speaking of you, we often referred of you as "Ozzie and Harriet" the true all-american family. Please accept our sympathies for your loss and may Renee rest in peace. Love, Roger & Nancy Haas.

Craig and Renee' Klevenhagen

December 22, 2020

We are deeply sorry to hear about Renee' passing away. Working at DKD she often talked to Craig and her niece Kim about the family (especially her grandchildren), the bicycle trips she and Dave took and being part of The Red Hats. He enjoyed listening to her and often shared her stories with me. I would sometimes get a chance to talk to her when I would stop by to visit or pick up Craig. I especially enjoyed talking to her at the Christmas dinners. I respected her opinion and enjoyed her ability to liven up a conversation. Renee' may have gone to be with the Lord but her passion for life, her love for others and her vibrant personality will remain in our thoughts and hearts.

We are so sorry to know that our friend Renee has lost her battle with cancer after fighting for so long. Carole has known Renee since grade school in Fullerton, and we remember all the times she and Dave double dated with us, also high school sweethearts and married as long. We often laughed about how the boys would get together after they dropped us off from dates! And Dave, remember riding in your convertible out to Hershey Park, where Rich ripped the seat of his pants and we had to go walking down the street until we found a lovely old lady who let us sew them together on her front porch?

This year will be the first one in many where the four of us will not be able to get together at Christmas with Ed and Betty Miller, also longtime friends and high school sweethearts from Whitehall and Catasauqua High Schools. We we will miss this so much. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Love, Carole and Rich Holub

Reneé was a very special person, always energetic and upbeat. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She was a wonderful sister to me since the day she was born, and it's hard to believe that she has passed. My condolences to her husband, and all the family and friends who loved her as I did.
