Richard Schelly Obituary

Richard J. "Dick" Schelly, 91, of Cetronia, died Friday, December 8, 2023, at his home. He was the husband of Ethel J. "Smoky" (Haines) Schelly for 64 years. Born June 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Alyce I. (Wesner) Schelly and was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Carey. Dick, a Muhlenberg ('55) graduate, was Vice President & CEO of C.Y. Schelly & Bros., Inc, Allentown, until 1973. A veteran of the Army and Reserves, he was also a Life Scout, Order of the Arrow, and Boy Scout leader of Troop 29, Cetronia. For 20 years he was a volunteer fireman and became a Captain for the Cetronia Fire Company. He was a member of Cedar Lutheran Church and served on the Joint Board, was Endowment committee chair, and served on the Oktoberfest committee. Dick enjoyed hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing and was a member of the Hiawatha Hunting and Fishing Club. Dick loved traveling to Germany and hosting German firefighters and German soccer players while they were visiting Cetronia and Allentown.

Surviving with his wife are his children, Matthew Schelly (Sylvia) of Elizabeth City, NC, Mark Schelly of Cetronia, Luke Schelly (Lydia Kelley) of Cincinnati, OH, and Jessica Schelly (Thomas Augustine) of Cetronia; grandchildren, Dr. Eva, Rose, Ezra and Kieran.

A service will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 16th at Cedar Church, 3419 Broadway, Allentown. Friends and family are invited to call from 9:30-10:30 AM prior to the service at the church. Interment to follow in the Cedar Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or Lehigh Valley Hospice.

I am very sorry to learn of Dick's passing. I always remember him as a mentor and comrade in the Fire Dept, especially regarding visiting and hosting our friends from Germany and Austria. My sincere condolences to the entire family, whom I've known my entire life. RIP dear friend Dick.
