Joe Seaph Poteat, 86, of 130 Mauney Road, Lawndale, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby.
Born in Spindale, he was a son of the late George Frank Poteat and Johnnie Mae Bridges Poteat. He was a retired textile employee. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.
He preceded in death by his wife, Mary Guffey Poteat.
Surviving are two daughters, Pat Poteat Jaynes of Lawndale and Teresa Poteat of Spindale; two sons, Joe Poteat of Laurinburg and Mike Poteat of Rutherfordton; a brother, George Poteat of Rutherfordton; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held by the Rev. William Alley at 3 p.m. today, May 30, 2008 at Crowe's Funeral Chapel in Rutherfordton. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park, Forest City.

William Ben Pyatt
Mr. William Ben Pyatt, age 75, of Marion, entered peacefully into his Savior's arms on Friday, May 23, 2008 at his residence.
A native of McDowell County, Ben was born on May 26, 1932 to the late Henry Pyatt and Nola Moore Pyatt. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher and on the cemetery committee among other offices he held there. Ben retired from the U.S. Army having served loyally in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He later retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture Company. He loved his family and friends and particularly his church family and of course, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His many hobbies and interests included fishing, gardening and traveling. He is now eternally reunited with his wife Pat who went on before him in December of 2006.
Left to cherish his memory are three children, Patricia Lawing and her husband, Joe, Ramona King and Mary Jo Bartlett and her husband, Ricky, all of Marion; one brother, Ray Pyatt of Marion; three sisters, Dorothy Hensley and Estelle Allman, both of Marion, and Betty Jo Phillips of Campobello, S.C.; six grandchildren, Dominic, Matthew, Shawn, Seth, Suni and Sophie; one great-grandson, Evan; a special friend, Pearl Bartlett; his beloved pastor, Eric Grindstaff and his wife, Cathy; his family of beach friends including Earl and Janet Bradham and Rick and Wanda Sanderson; and dear friends Charles and Loann Kincaid from Valdese and Ralph and Polly Mayo from Marion.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Grindstaff officiating. The family has requested no flowers, please.
