The Rev. Thomas "Tom"

Willoughby Sr.

March 5, 1951 - July 20, 2021

The Rev. Thomas "Tom" Willoughby Sr., 70, of Marion, went home to his heavenly reward Tuesday, July 20, 2021, after a life well lived.

Tom was born March 5, 1951, in Bladen County, to Mildred Johns Willoughby of Lumberton and to the late Alex C. Willoughby Sr.

He joined the Army at the age of 17 and received a Purple Heart in battle. On Dec. 18, 1970, he married the love of his life, Patricia Strickland Willoughby, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He devoted his life to God and faithfully served as a Minister for over 20 years, until he retired from ministry.

In addition to his mother, those left behind to cherish Tom's memory are his loving wife; three children, Lori and Johnny Holbrook of Sapphire, Thomas Willoughby Jr. of Newport, and Tonya and Chad Mease of Marion; as well as his goddaughter, Cori and Levi Schultz of Morehead City. He was also a wonderful Papa to his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers and six sisters as well as countless nieces and nephews.

Tom's family would like to extend their gratitude to the amazing staff in the MICU at Charles George VA Medical Center of Asheville for all the love and care they showed Tom during his recent illness.

A celebration of Tom's Life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 31, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 1036 Zion Hill Rd. in Marion, with Dr. Tom Walker and the Rev. Alex Willoughby officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Tom's memory are asked to consider the Sheep Dog Impact Assistance WNC, 271A Old Barn Rd., Hendersonville, NC 28791.

Even though it´s been a good 30 years that I have not seen or talked to Tom or his brother I can only go back to the days of where I went to Fruit-land Bible Baptist Institute at the same time as they Tom along with his brother were the most down to earth folks and they made you feel very welcome in their homes My daughters and I enjoyed the fellowship that we had for a short time but most of all staying with the call of serving our LORD JESUS CHRIST we will keep his family and friends in our prayers

My memories of Tom are limited to events that led him back to Raft Swamp, times he came with Ms. Mildred (a NUMBER ONE lady) to celebrate homecoming, Mother's Day, Christmas, and other events. And, oh, those wonderful times when he delivered the message for various reasons ( I was not a member when he pastored Raft Swamp) . I loved to hear his message and was never ready for it to stop. I felt as though I could have listened much longer than the allotted time. Just those short times of seeing and hearing him left an impression of a gentle loving soul that loved and served the Lord. I thank God for Tom and his family and am grateful for the times I was allowed to be where I could hear his teaching. No doubt he will be sorely missed on this earth by family and friends and by some who knew him less well. My prayers and condolences are with you in the times of grief, and I rejoice with you in the knowledge that Tom knew the Lord and his soul is safe with the Lord. May God bless ! Love to you all.
