Raised in Pineville, LA, John developed a childhood interest in electronics and radio and earned his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (E.E.) at Louisiana Tech. He continued his E.E. studies at Georgia Tech, where he soon earned his Master's. In Atlanta he met Carole O'Brient, whom he married in 1968. Every day he said how grateful he was that he had married this nurse.
They settled in Marietta, where they raised their children. While working at Lockheed for several years, he earned his pilot's license in the flying club. Soon he joined Georgia Tech Research Institute as a senior research engineer. Passionate about learning, he earned his Ph.D. at Georgia Tech in 1999 at the age of 58. He concluded his final working years teaching at Tech and retired after nearly 30 years.
John was a Christian and a faithful member of Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, frequently taught Sunday School, and guided his family in Christian faith. As a ham radio operator, he spoke to missionaries and others around the globe and helped set up a Christian radio station in Uganda out of his desire to share Christ with others.
John loved gathering and laughing with his family. He deeply treasured hugs and time with his precious grandchildren.
