Gabriel Mayorga Obituary

Gabriel M. Mayorga
"Gabe's Tavern"
March 21, 1929 - Feb. 26, 2014

Gabriel Mayorga was born, March 21, 1929 in Los Angeles, Ca., to Juan Jose and Tranquilina Mayorga ( even though he would tell people he was born in Lincoln County, Arkansas).  Raised in Pinedale, Ca. by his mother and step-father. Gabriel went to the armed forces in 1945 at 16 years old, (of course he lied about his age), where he spent four years, 3 of those in Japan. He really enjoyed speaking Japanese on occasion, even most recently with his wound care specialist Suki, where he was cared for, with much compassion and whose office personal he liked very much.
Gabriel moved from Fresno to Merced, bringing with him, his wife Nancy and 3 of his soon to be 8 children.  He was a barber for over 60 years.  He also was the sole proprietor of Gabe's Tavern where he ran both businesses for many, many years. He performed his last hair cut on January 4, 14, 2014.  Our Dad lost his battle, February 26, 2014 with loved ones by his side.
Dad was a hard working man, as hard as he was in life.  Dad enjoyed his work and most of all; anyone who really knew him can tell you he enjoyed watching the Cowboy channel all day long.  He loved the game of pool and was a great pool player and when he took off his glasses you were sure to lose.
Thankfully to the unconditional love, patience and kindness of his daughters, Marian, Mary & son in law Joe Medina, Dad was able to maintain independent living at home until he left us.  Special Thanks to Duffy (Adolfo) Cortinas for keeping our Dad's business going for him.
Gabriel is preceded in death by his son Gabe Mayorga, daughter in-law Anna Mayorga and granddaughter Deborah Mayorga, his parents, brothers; Thomas and Juan Mayorga both of Fresno, and sister, Dolores Bonillas of Riverside.
He is survived by his son, Peter Mayorga of Clovis.  Daughters, Marian Cortinas of Winton, Vivian Balderama of San Antonio, Texas,  Mary Medina and Myrna Shimrado both of Merced. Sylvia Lagos of San Jose and Deborah Arroyo of Fremont.  Estranged wife and friend Nancy Mayorga of Merced. Sisters Julia Dominquez of Fresno and Virginia Marquez of Pinedale.  21 grandchildren,   47 great-grand children and 5 great great-grandchildren, and many more loved family members.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 13th, from 4-8pm, at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, 901 W  Main St., Merced.  Mass will be held March 14th at Sacred Heart Church, 519 W 13th St, at 10:00am.  Burial directly after at District Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his son Gabe.
On behalf of the entire Gabriel Mayorga family; we would like to Thank all the family, friends, and patrons for your LOVE, support and patience with our Dad and those who came to visit him at home and in the hospital.  Also special thanks to all the Dr.s, nurses, and hospital personnel that cared for our Dad.
Dad you will truly be missed. You were the strongest among us and passed that strength on to us. Always know how much we love you.  We'll strive to make you proud.

“Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought away. For as long as we have our memories, they'll live on in our hearts everyday”.

I will never watch a western that I do not remember the hours of reruns we sat through. The many laughs we shared in the past and thank you for personally bringing the dog bank to the office for me in the last month of your life here on earth. Thank you for the only time I have been to Monterey; it was fun! I will never forget the 3 years of happy times and crazy roads. <3

Well Dad, you almost made your 85th birthday but I guess you just couldn't wait to celebrate with everyone above. You put up a good fight for several months, in fact you fought with everyone. Determined to do things your way right to the end. I do believe that is one trait we all inherited from you.
Merced won't be the same without you! No longer cutting hair or behind the bar. But knowing you, (like my son Peter said) the first thing you probably did is try to cut Jesus's hair & serve up a couple to the angles!
Rest now Dad. Give Grma T, Grampa, Gabe & Anna and all my uncle's & aunt's big hugs from me . Tell them all I miss them, as I miss you.
Until we meet again may the Great Spirt enjoy your humor & you. I love you Dad,

Sylvia.
Ps Try to behave......

Uncle Gabe, unfortunately your light has ran out on this earth but in my heart and in my memories you will always be a shining light along with my Grandma Dolores, Grandma T., my Uncle Tommy. You all are my inspirations of what family should be. My greatest memories of you are the times I would visit Fresno with my aunts Camille and Anita and before we would even end up at my aunt Virginia's house we would drive one more hour further north to your bar so we could visit with you, Gabe, and Pete, my aunts would shoot some pool, drink some beer and all of us kids would play around even though we were not suppose to but you didn't care... we were family and if that was the time we came to visit then that was the time were going to visit you. Now your reunited with the family you had before all of us, getting things ready for when we go to visit you again. I love you and don't worry we are all strong and will be ok.

DAD, I LOVE YOU SO, SO, MUCH. I MISS GOING TO YOUR HOUSE EVERY DAY. WE GOT SO CLOSE THESE LAST FEW MONTHS. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN I WOULD ASK YOU IF YOU WHERE COLD, YOU WOULD SAY (JUST A LITTLE BIT) OR IF YOU WHERE HUNGRY YOU WOULD SAY (JUST A LITTLE BIT). BUT I KNOW THAT I WILL MISS YOU A LOT. I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU. I LOVE YOU DAD.
