Albert Long Obituary

On September 12th, Albert Richard (Dick) Long passed away peacefully at the age of 90. He was born to parents Raymond Albert Long and Mary Jacobs, and raised in Santa Clara, CA.Dick attended Saint Clare's Catholic School, Bellarmine Prep (where he played multiple varsity sports), Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley, and San José State University. He graduated from Georgetown Dental School in 1962. Dick's college years were interrupted by service in the US Army during the Korean War. After finishing dental school and returning to California to start a practice, he married Carol Clayton of Minnesota in 1963. They lived in Capitola until 1968, when they moved to Scotts Valley to raise their children Mary and Nicholas. Dick had a dental practice in Santa Cruz, and then San José, until the early 2000s, serving those communities for over 40 years. Dick was an active outdoorsman, enjoying fishing (salt and fresh water), camping, and hunting with family and friends from both early and later in his life. He was a fan of all kinds of sports, coaching Nick's Little League teams, and he especially loved watching his grandsons play baseball, basketball, and water polo at all levels in his later years. He was also an avid gardener and carpenter, often building furniture out of repurposed wood, which his children still enjoy using. He enjoyed the arts as well, particularly big band and country music. And he always enjoyed a good joke. Dick was preceded in death by his father Raymond, mother Mary, elder brother Raymond, and younger brother Phillip. He is survived by his wife Carol, children Mary and Nick (Jeanette), and grandsons Connor and Phillip. Interment will be private.
