Arthur Chinchen Obituary

Arthur Stanley "Stan" Chinchen was born December 20, 1927 in San Jose. He attended Trace Elementary, Hoover Middle, and Lincoln High Schools. After high school graduation, Stan served two years in the Navy. He returned home and earned a business degree from San Jose State University. He worked on the family pear ranch in 1948 and married his wife, Diane, of almost 75 years. Stan and Diane always said, "We are blessed to have so many years together."Stan was deeply proud of his South Bay heritage. He had a strong commitment to giving back to his community. When he retired from ranching in 1978, he continued to actively involve himself in fundraising campaigns for the YMCA, the SJSU Foundation, the Boy Scouts of America, and Goodwill. Stan was on the board of the YMCA for over 60 years, then continued as an honorary member. He was instrumental in the development of the Northwest Branch of the YMCA and he participated in their annual capital fund. He was especially passionate about Camp Campbell. The YMCA unanimously agreed to dedicate the chapel in his name, CHINCHEN CHAPEL.Stan's involvement with SJSU began in 1945. He was a member of the Spartan Foundation. Stan was involved in fundraising for the expansion of Spartan Stadium during the early 80s. SJSU football continues to be an important part of Stan's legacy. Undoubtedly, he will continue to let the coach know when the wrong play has been called!Stan was an adventurous soul and delighted in a challenge. Bungie jumping in his 70's and snow skiing at 89, kept his adventurous spirit alive. Stan was also an avid golfer until his 95th year, along with playing cards with his poker buddies. We will deeply miss him warm and vibrant spirit, his gift of storytelling and commitment to making the world a better place. He is survived by his wife Diane, daughter Caren, daughter Nancy and husband Ralph, and son David and wife Marcie. 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren will also miss "Bompa" dearly. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the YMCA, SJSU Foundation, or a charity of your choice.A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 13th at 11:00am, at the San Jose Country Club.

He was the most wonderful man. He was very kind and generous to my mother. Her last few years in her rest home he went to see her more than three or four times a month. We will miss him dearly.

"Stan" Chinchen was a role model for me when I was a kid. He was so handsome and such a fine athlete. I will always remember him and Diane.
